China is killing us

It is illegal to take a drug that is manufactured here in the United States across the border to Canada and then back into the U.S. and sell it. But making drugs in China and then selling them here is just fine.

This example of incredible insanity has led to the Heparin scandal. Heparin is a blood thinner, and much of it is manufactured in China. Unfortunately, we don't have full control over that manufacture, so when an imitation drug came across the Pacific marked as the real thing, it killed 19 Americans.

You would think that these deaths would cause Congress to wake up. But no, they're still asleep on the job. According to the NY Times, "Congressional Democrats are talking about authorizing more money so the F.D.A. can do more overseas inspections, particularly in China, where more and more drug ingredients are made."

Emperor Bloomberg attends Debutante Ball without clothes.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg used his first public appearance since announcing switching from the Republican Party to being an independent, a press conference celebrating the alleged success of his 311 program, to showcase his policy creativity to the media.

Bloomberg’s aware that his leaving the Republican Party would confirm to the media, his current constituents and potential presidential voters, that he’s pursuing an independent Presidential candidacy, despite saying wink, wink, I’m not running, and knew the world be watching his first appearance after making public his official political independence. This is why Bloomberg is using a press conference honoring 311, a program that he is particularly but unjustifiably proud of, as the location of his personal Presidential Debutante Ball.

Bloomberg hoped touting 311 success would perpetuate the myth that he’s a non-partisan problem solver. But the emperor has no clothes. 311 is useless.

Drowning America in a Bathtub: The Republican Doctrine

The Republican party is killing Americans. And I don't just mean our soldiers in their useless war in Iraq. I mean regular American civilians, and the killing of Americans, though unintended, is a direct result of Republican policy. Let me say that again. A direct, if unintended, result of Republican domestic policy is the needless death of American citizens.

Grover Norquist, one of the darlings of the extreme rightwing, Gingrich/Bush/McCain branch of the Republican party, once said, "I don't want to abolish government. I simply want to reduce it to the size where I can drag it into the bathroom and drown it in the bathtub." This statement has been the basis of Republican policy. Norquist went into more detail:

"Cutting the government in half in one generation is both an ambitious and reasonable goal," Norquist stated in May 2000. "If we work hard we will accomplish this and more by 2025. Then the conservative movement can set a new goal. I have a recommendation: To cut government in half again by 2050"

What are the consequences of this extreme right-wing "Drown Government in a Bathtub" doctrine? You drown AMERICA along with it.

“These guys just don’t know when to quit. The Senate Republicans holding an ethics hearing is like O.J. searching for the real killer. Senate Republicans should end the partisan theatrics and join the Governor in getting back to work on the real issues that matter to working families. Let’s end the show trial, leave the investigating to the investigators, and get back to work.”

— Jonathan Rosen for the New York State Democratic Committee
