New York Press

Why I refuse to link to The New York Times

I refuse to give The New York Times the hard earned Google juice and page rank I have earned with my blogs. When I checked out their new design I noticed their "Most blogged" box linking to .... no blogs. Excuse me? How can you know it is most blogged if you don't show who is blogging to you in the first place?

Well, I'm glad I am not the only one who noticed.

[via New York Times faux "most blogged" list -- what a bunch of leeches. - The Jason Calacanis Weblog]:

Just when you think the NYT is starting to get it they create a "Most Blogged" list *without* the back up data of who's blogging the stories!!!

Come on NYT... would it kill you to link to a blog!??!?!?!

Let me get this straight: you'll mine the data from the blogosphere to make your list, but you won't reward the blogosphere by linking back?!?!?!

That makes you a bunch of leeches--you take but you give nothing.

You see, the more we link to them, the not only the more traffic the get, but the higher in Google ranking they will be. And that is worth money. A. LOT. OF. MONEY. Jason Calacanis knows this. That's why he calls them leeches.

So boo to them.

Washington Post, on the other hand ... Thanks to Technorati, they get my heart-felt, "Yeah!"

Sure, they fucked up royally with Ben Domenech, but at least they acknowledge the existence of blogs ... more importantly my blogs.

Other blog friendly publications?

Senator Brokeback

Must. Stop. Peeing. On. My. Self. From The gossip column of the now-editorless NY Press:

What well-spoken conservative Republican senator who is often mentioned as a possible replacement for Vice-President Dick Cheney—should Cheney’s health decline further—is, as they used to say, a “confirmed bachelor

Cartoon wars come to New York – NY Press staff walks out

The Politicker reports that the cartoon controversy has reached these shores. To be specific, following a refusal by the publishers of the New York Press to run the cartoons, the huddled masses of the paper's editorial staff, yearning to breathe free, have walked out en masse.

Bravo, gentlemen.

To be sure, the cartoons in question – see them here - are in part crass and offensive, as we discuss in depth here and here - but at this stage of the story, the overriding concern is not the original offending images. It is the senseless and barbaric violence unleashed in their name. It is the fact that Scandinavians are fleeing the Near East under military guard. It is that embassies have been burned. It is that enraged hordes are burning the Danish flag – a white cross on red – with especial relish, seemingly because they see it as a Christian symbol as well as a Danish one.

It's enough.

This is no longer about racism or Islamophobia. It is about whether or not our free press will allow itself to be muzzled by hate-mongers who knowingly incite and use violence to suppress ideas they deign that others have no right to entertain. Nobody in a free society has the right not to be offended. If you don't like what you see, turn the page, flip the channel, cancel your subscription, surf to another web site.

Will our press rise to the challenge? Stay tuned.

Update

The Pentagon Post reports that the Bush administration's insipid, spineless cowering hasn't paid off. Several people in Afghanistan got killed trying to ransack a U.S. base.

Daily Gotham Moving up in Influence?

I was posting on Daily Kos regarding what media is progressive friendly and wanted to add the show I plugged not too long ago, Chris Owens' "Inside the Congressional Black Caucus." I was looking for as official a notice of its inception as I could and found a blurb on the New York Press website. I was all ready to use their blurb as my link for info on the show...until I noticed what they cite as their source of info...my diary here on Daily Gotham! I am still not used to being used as a source or citation (outside of my scientific work). Have to admit it feels good. Thanks New York Press! I'll return the favor sometime : -)
