Yvette Clarke on Yassky, then flips for Eugene
As Eugene fights for his seat I find it interesting Yvette is backing him though the same reason why he is being held up on his swear in is the same reason she felt Yassky could not be the Congressman on the 11th CD.
Here is a blurb from a interview on Channel 4 with Jay DeRapper during the race last summer:
DeDAPPER: Yvette, you've been in the city council, too. You've worked on many of these issues.
Ms. CLARK: That's right.
DeDAPPER: You ran against Major Owens last time...
Ms. CLARK: Yes, I did.
DeDAPPER: ...and you lost.
Ms. CLARK: Yes, I did.
DeDAPPER: Should this seat be held by an African-American to represent--or not even necessarily an African-American, someone of color--to represent the people in this district, the majority of the people in this district, who are people of color?
Ms. CLARK: And clearly that is a decision that the voters will make. We have the candidates in this race, and they're seated here today. I think what's most important is that the voters look at authentic representation. Those who have fought...
DeDAPPER: What does--what does that--what does that mean?
Ms. CLARK: When I say authentic...
DeDAPPER: Because that sounds like--that sounds like a code word.
Ms. CLARK: A code word.
DeDAPPER: Yeah.
Ms. CLARK: It's not a code word. I think what it shows is those who have been laboring in the district have delivered for the district and have had the experience in working in the legislative body, who have perhaps even, like myself, been born and raised in this district. And right there in the council--in the council district, the council districts which reside in the heart of this 11th Congressional District, all of the indicators of success have been fought for. When you look at health care, you look at the expansion of King's County Hospital, Downstate Medical Center, you look at Caledonia and what we had to go through, the struggle to just provide health care services to the people who reside within the 11th Congressional, it's been done. When you look at community preservation, when you look at landmarking--all of the issues that impact on the quality of life of the people who reside within this congressional district--I've been there for them, and they recognize that. That's much more authentic...
DeDAPPER: You--you and David Yassky have worked together in the city council.
Ms. CLARK: Oh, yes. Certainly. And the work that I do accrued directly to the 11th Congressional District as opposed to...
DeDAPPER: Did he move into--did he move into this district just to for this seat?
Ms. CLARK: Oh, yes he did. Yes, he did. That's very clear.
DeDAPPER: Do you think that makes him a carpetbagger?
Ms. CLARK: I think it does. Certainly.
DeDAPPER: Do you think he shouldn't be running in this race?
Ms. CLARK: No, I think he has, in a democracy, the right to run, but we have to make the facts clear here. And the fact of the matter is that David Yassky could have run in the district in which he resides. This is a congressional year. He made a decision that in this--in this election cycle, he would move his family into the 11th Congressional District in order to run.
DeDAPPER: Was that a career move, then?
Mr. YASSKY: Jay, I'm very committed to 11th District. I live there, my family's there, I'm raising my children there. I've represented a big part of it for years in the city council, and before when I worked for the Congress...
DeDAPPER: Like who?
Mr. YASSKY: ...and did things like Brady law, assault weapons. And you know, the laws require...
DeDAPPER: (Unintelligible) But--but why did you move?
Mr. YASSKY: Because we don't need any more distractions. The issue in this race should be who is going to be most effective for the voters, and I think that's what voters want to talk--when I'm--when I'm out knocking on doors every night, voters want to know...
So I guess its OK to move into the district to take a seat as long as its protects you in 2008... Run Chris Run... if not someone please run.
