Tell Pataki Emergency Contraception is for women like me, not just sluts

No, sluts are not the only ones using Plan B. I have been a proud user of Plan B (Levonorgestrel) Emergency Contraception and there is just not enough good things for me to say about it. I am one of many women who cannot use oral contraceptives, no matter how low the dosage of hormones. My family physician had me try everything possible to no avail. From physical problems like nausea and dizziness to "mood swings", the pill is just not for me. Mind you, my partner and I use condoms, spermicides AND a diaphragm. We even try to do the twist while keeping Rhythm. But you never can be safe enough : Our two kids are testaments to what a broken condom (actually two) can look like. For people like me, though, it was always a privilege to have PlanB available, albeit a privilege limited to one pharmacy. How many women, especially the many poor and working class women who have no medical insurance or enough money to pay out of pocket for a doctor's visit, may have ended up paying more money for an abortion because they didn't have access to this $30 solution? I have been monogamous and "reproductive aware" as they can be. I have been with my partner now for about 18 years. For the first 9 years of our relationship, nary an "accident" happened. And as I said, we have two children --unplanned but not unwanted. It's crazy that even for people like me this product was not easily available. Yet what is insane is the fact this law is a compromise of sorts. Why? The registered nurse or pharmacist does not have to dispense the prescription if they do not want to : NARAL Pro-Choice New York: Fact Sheets
The Unintended Pregnancy Prevention Act permits trained pharmacists and registered nurses to dispense emergency contraception (EC) pursuant to a non-patient specific regimen authorized by a licensed prescriber (i.e. physician, nurse practitioner or licensed midwife) on a voluntary basis.
That NARAL is touting this as decisive win is, well, eyebrow raising. Yeah, it may be better than nothing but, is NARAL going to keep tabs all across the state of the pharmacists and RNs that won't dispense the prescription? Anyhow, take a moment to either go to the NARAL site or the NYCLU site and send a fax to Pataki urging him to not cave to the religious extremists that have every single Republican state official grabbed by their conception-inducing balls: [via Take Action: Emergency Contraception Pataki]:
Tell Governor Pataki To Sign The Emergency Contraception Legislation Into Law! Anti-Choice Forces Are Calling For A Veto. Last month, your calls to Senator Bruno helped convince the New York State Legislature to pass a bill giving women access to Emergency Contraception ("EC") over-the-counter! The bill would allow pharmacists and nurses to dispense emergency contraception to women who need it and don't have a doctor's prescription. EC, or the "morning after pill," is an extremely safe and effective means of reducing the risk of pregnancy by as much as 89% when taken as soon as possible within five days after unprotected sex or contraception failure. Research suggests that prompt access to EC could prevent nearly half of all unintended pregnancies. Currently, women need a prescription to obtain this time sensitive medication, even though it meets all the FDA requirements for over-the-counter status. Governor Pataki is under tremendous pressure from anti-choice forces to veto this important public health measure. Let him know that you are one of the millions of New Yorkers who want over-the-counter access to EC!
So go ahead and send him a fax through the NYCLU site. Or better yet --call him : Governor George E. Pataki State Capitol Albany, NY 12224 518-474-8390 George Pataki's NYC Offices 212) 681-4580 To Email The Governor: http://161.11.3.75/ Nota Bene: The writer, having been a slut herself at some point or another in her lifetime, did not intend to belittle, mock or cause harm to any or all sluts who read this blog. If any of you sluts out there have been emotionally harmed, I apologize profusely in advance. Slut.
