Short Takes Friday

The Eagle has landed Do you love tall sailing ships? The US Coast Guard training ship The Eagle has docked at the foot of pier 17, at the South Street Seaport. The ship is great (no signs of its Nazi origin), the coast guardsmen and women charming; tours from 9:00-6:30 Sat & Sun. If you go Sat. morning, check out the asbestos decontamination exercise run by Fire at the Sanitation garage at the foot of Montgomery Street.

After years of torture and harsh confinement, US officials have decided to allow some "high value" Guantanamo detainees to lawyer-up . (Although at least one of them, already represented by counsel, has not been allowed to get letters from her).

The poor get sicker than the rich. Great and serious congratulations are due to Comptroller William Thompson who (I guess with staff support) has produced a really smart interesting and important analysis of the NYC health impacts of class and cash. Surpise!

Will I See You Saturday On East 3rd Street At 1PM?

Trying to prevent the mass eviction of tenants from their rent regulated apartments is important, in my view. Please consider coming to the demonstration on Saturday on East 3rd Street in Manhattan between 1 Ave. & 2nd Ave.

The tenants at 47 East 3rd Street are threatened with eviction and homelessness (where could they find affordable housing?). Their landlord, stating that the tenants apartments are needed for the personal use of the owners, has won an unprecedented victory in NY State Courts. Any building could be emptied on the basis of such a claim. Yours, mine. I spoke to a rent regulated tenant in Stuyvesant Town who could not imagine being vulnerable to eviction on such a basis. Welcome to 2007.

If you want to participate in the march which starts before the rally, meet me at 9th Street and Avenue B at Noon. After the demonstration, you can go to the Anarchist Book Fair at Judson Memorial Church (55 Washington Square South)only a few block away. What is an anarchist book fair anyway -- disordered books? Books of or books by anarchists?

Fun with PhotoShop

There is a whole process to vlogging that I find totally unsatisfying. I hate editing and I hate compressing files for better streaming because it takes too long and I want to put thing up on the web NOW! The upside of editing and going through frames is that you get to crack yourself up with the body language of your subjects.

Case in point : I could spend hours watching Christine Quinn talk ... with the volume off. Check her out. She looks like she's singing --although I suggest she get a voice coach because she strains her voice during speeches. Girlfriend, breathe!

Then it's not even anything they're doing.

I happen to like the camera perspective on these photos
of Sylvia Friedman and Al Doyle.

And then, there is Mark Green...

More after the jump.

Progressive Districts

Only in New York

We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many long months of struggle and of suffering.

You ask, what is our policy? I say it is to wage war by land, sea, and air. War with all our might and with all the strength God can give us, to wage war against a monstrous tyranny never surpassed in the dark and lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy.

You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word. It is victory. Victory at all costs - Victory in spite of all terrors - Victory, however long and hard the road may be, for without victory there is no survival.

— Winston Churchill
