Mermaid Parade Queen's Bid To Save Coney Island Gains Support While Coney Sellout Recchia Under Investigation For Conflict Of Interest Loan

NEW YORK – It's been a long, media blitz weekend for Savitri D, Queen Of The Coney Island Mermaid Parade and Director of Reverend Billy and the Church Of Stop Shopping, as her hunger strike to save Coney Island enters its fourth day.

Her vigil without food, while living in the window of the Sideshows By The Seashore building and broadcasting live over webcam, aims to draw New Yorkers to a June 24th Community Meeting at Lincoln High School to halt a reduction of Coney Island amusement space from 60 acres to 9 acres. The hunger strike has won the hearts of thousands of New Yorkers, with appearances on television, print, radio and the blogosphere.

Speaking of the surprise proposal to replace large swaths of Coney Island with high-rise “hotels” and a shopping mall, Savitri remarked in a recent interview:

Should Reverend Billy Play Nice At The Spiegeltent?

Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping have a run of shows at the Spiegeltent, located in the South Street Seaport. Billy and the Choir have performed two shows and have been targeting Victoria's Secret, a tennant of the Seaport Mall next door to the venue. The Church has been banned from the mall without ever having set foot inside, and now the producers of the Spiegeltent have expressed they don't want the Church to make any political speech outdoors, even on the grounds of the Spiegeltent site.

So should the Church just perform in the tent and save the demonstrations for elsewhere, or should the producers have known this would happen when they invited them down?

6/14 @ 8pm Rev Billy's Fabulous Worship!

14.06.2006 - 20:00

St. Mark's Church 10th St and 2nd Ave, East Village, NYC
Wednesday June 14, 8 PM, $5 Reserve: RevBilly.com/events

Featuring a new song from the choir --
ARE YOU MY LOVER OR ARE YOU MY LOGO?

In this Fabulous Worship, we plan to reflect on The Shopocalypse Tour. We took two buses across the country last December - trying to Save Christmas from the Shopocalypse!

Since then the church faithful have been singing and preaching in California and in Switzerland, before returning by way of Columbus, Ohio (which is like the Lake of Hellfire, only less interesting). It was there the Reverend confronted Victoria's Secret shareholders at their annual meeting. Their MILLION (stupid semi-porn) CATALOGUES A DAY come from clear-cut, virgin, boreal forests.

Now back home - We have joined the Wal-Mart Free NYC campaign, trying to keep the Bronx out of the big box. The retail Devil has even set up a fake but very well funded Bronx Chamber of Commerce. Evil never rests. Will somebody give us a CHANGE-A-LUJAH!
