John McCain's VP pick, corrupt Republican Sarah Palin [1], turns out to have a teenage daughter who is pregnant out of wedlock. And this has created quite a bit of consternation among republicans [2]. Many righ wingers are condemning McCain and Palin over Palin's teen daughter's pregnancy [3]. Of course McCain is already being attacked by Bush's own pastor for his immorality and poor character [4], so this is bound to further alienate McCain's base.
But I don't condemn Palin over her daughter's pregnancy per se. This is life. Studies show that more than 90% of Americans have sex before marriage [5], most starting while they are young. Palin's family is no different than most of our families and they are sticking together over this. Good for them!
But what does get me is the lack of preparation and the hypocrisy shown by this. McCain and Palin didn't even prepare their own party for this. Mere days after McCain announced Palin as his running mate and just before the start of the republican convention the news came out. Few republicans were prepared for it. Palin showed a lack of judgement in not providing her daughter with enough information about sex so that he daughter could take proper precautions, and both McCain and Palin showed poor judgement in not planning ahead for this revalation, not even warning their own party in advance. Poor planning is what we have had under Bush...we don't need more of it.
And then there is the hypocrisy. The right wing always yammering about immorality and criticizing the sex lives of Democrats, and yet we have McCain's own infidelities (which is part of what alienated Bush's pastor) and the teen pregnancy in Palin's family. If you are going to criticize others for their sexual behavior, you have to hold yourself to the same standards. McCain and Palin love to point the finger, but they are no different than anyone else. They talk about morality and criticize and whine about it, but they show no morality of their own. From McCain's infidelities and his involvement in the Savings and Loan scandal, to Palin's teen daughter, her ties to the extremely corrupt Alaska Republican Party [6], and the fact that she is under investigation by the FBI for abuse of power and you have nothing but another pair of republican hypocrites.
Finally, there is the fact that McCain and Palin have both opposed programs for pregnant teens [7], basically saying that if your family isn't rich like theirs, you are shit out of luck. They are elitist in the worst way, giving themselves absolution for every kind of immorality while condemning and punishing everyone else for any minor or imagined transgression.
McCain/Palin: nothing but more Bush hypocrisy, more Bush lack of planning and more Bush failure.
