S-CHIP Veto Sustained. 273-156

The House of Representatives failed to override President Bush's veto of the State-Children's Health Insurance Program (S-CHIP). Two Democrats joined 154 Bush-loyal GOP Congress Members to sustain the veto. The roll call is here [1], The NY Times story, here [2]
quotes CA. Rep. Pete Stark

“You don’t have money to fund the war or children. But you’re going to spend it to blow up innocent people if we can get enough kids to grow old enough for you to send to Iraq to get their heads blown off for the president’s amusement.”

NY Congress Member Peter King didn't vote, Randy Kuhl and Tom Reynolds stood by their increasingly isolated President and continued to vote against health insurance for children. The effort to override Mr. Bush's veto gained no support from the GOP (indeed, it lost Mr. King's vote). Thoughts on what's next after the jump.

Will the next step be a watered down bill as GOP Senatorial leadership has proposed (Their proposal would actually shrink the number of insured children)? How do you think we can make this vote haunt those bush-loyal nay-voters into early retirement? Friday's Washington Post reports [3] that Speaker Pelosi's next step will be to propose an almost identical bill and that Moveon has begun another ad campaign directed at six anti-S-CHIP Members. Perhaps as usual, the most useful collection of insights and links on the subject comes from DemFromCt at Daily Kos [4].

For New Yorkers like me, three Bush loyalists: King, Kuhl and Reynolds have become increasingly tempting targets as a result of their votes on S-CHIP.
