'GREEN-COLLAR' JOBS: A Solution to NYC's Environmental and Workforce Ills?
This comes from Sustainable South Bronx:
November 12th--'GREEN-COLLAR' JOBS: A Solution to NYC's Environmental and Workforce Ills?
Join SSBx's Executive Director Miquela Craytor on Wednesday, November 12, 2008, from 10 am to 12 pm for a seminar on green collar jobs in New York City.
Across the U.S., labor and political leaders advocate investment in a green economic recovery to boost employment and address climate change. Last year, Congress passed the Green Jobs Act which, if fully funded, would allocate $125 million to train workers in green trades. The Presidential candidates have sought even greater investments in green infrastructure.
What exactly are 'green-collar' jobs--and how can New York City create them?

Bill Clinton: Giving
If you see me in a suit it generally means one of two things: I am going to a wedding or I am invited to an event with Bill Clinton.
The work I have done for Kiva, both as a lender and a blogger, has gotten some attention. My Kiva diaries are among the more popular ones I write. A little while back I was interviewed by BBC World News as a lender. And most recently, I was invited to a private panel discussion for the release of Bill Clinton’s latest Book, GIVING: How Each of Us Can Change the World. I do not have a copy of this book as of yet so this is not a book review, though that might come. Instead I want to discuss the event and some of the individuals and organizations that were highlighted. read more »

East River Day: June 21st
This comes from the Municipal Art Society: (I can't make it...will be doing the final practice run of my talk for the International C. elegans Meeting at UCLA, but sounds good!)
New York’s waterfront is being transformed. From Brooklyn Bridge Park to Throg’s Neck on the East River alone, over 1000 acres of redevelopment is slated to occur over the upcoming years. This scale of development is an enormous opportunity - and a risk. Too much waterfront development in recent years has created sterile, privatized places that don’t do justice to New York.
Now is the time to set an agenda to ensure we create an East River waterfront that reflects the diversity, vibrancy and future sustainability of New York. Responding to the Mayor’s bold plan to reclaim 90% of New York’s waterways for recreational use, the Municipal Art Society and the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance are part of a coalition of over 40 groups that is launching the East River Agenda on next Thursday, June 21st on East River Day. read more »
