Democracy for New York City Endorses Jesus Gonzalez For State Assembly District 54 in Brooklyn

New York, N.Y., July 26, 2011 – Democracy for New York City (DFNYC) is pleased to announce the organization’s official endorsement of Jesus Gonzalez for the 54th Assembly District race in Brooklyn. The election will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011.

“We are excited to have endorsed Jesus Gonzalez in this important special election,” said DFNYC President Josh Silverstein. “Jesus is a committed progressive activist and has worked for years to help improve his community. The members of Democracy for New York City are ready to help him win this race and represent the district up in Albany.”

The 54th State Assembly District encompasses Bushwick, East New York, Cypress Hills, and part of Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn. The seat was vacated when Assemblyman Darryl C. Towns joined the Cuomo administration three months ago. ...

Mr. Gonzalez, 25, is a community organizer with Make the Road New York, an advocacy group for immigrants, where he has worked for 13 years. He is a life-long resident of Bushwick and attended P.S. 299 on Evergreen and Madison and graduated from Bushwick Community High School. Mr. Gonzalez’s campaign website is: http://www.gonzalezforassembly.com.

You can see Mr. Gonzalez's answers to the DFNYC questionnaire to find out more about him.

I already endorsed Jesus Gonzalez awhile back. He is by far the best candidate in the race and his main opponent is a horrible, anti-choice, anti-LGBT candidate for Assembly named Rafael Espinal who is, in essence, a Republican-at-heart who just happens to be allied with the corrupt Brooklyn Party Boss Vito Lopez.

esus Gonzalez has received the endorsement of a wide range of Brooklyn activists, including Congresswoman Nydia Velasquez, Councilwoman Diana Reyna, Reform District Leader Lincoln Restler, Reform District Leader Chris Owens, and the New Kings Democrats. He has also been endorsed by 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care, New York Communities for Change, the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1500, New York/New Jersey Regional Joint Board, Workers United, Laundry, Distribution and Food Service Joint Board, Workers United, and the Communications Workers of America, Region 1.
