J Street - Liberty Walk for Religious Freedom
Via email from the good folks at J Street:
Michael,
Opponents of the proposed Muslim community center are holding a rally on 9/11 at the site of the proposed center -- and hope to drown out moderate voices of tolerance like ours with a message of hate and fear.
It's not the only event fanning the flames of anti-Muslim sentiment this weekend. As explained in this New York Times article, it is part of a rising tide of Islamophobia that is making Muslim Americans feel less welcome in their communities. In Florida, one Church is even garnering national and international attention for hosting a Koran burning!
Don't let these be the only voices heard this coming weekend.
Join J Street NYC on Sunday, September 12th to rally for tolerance with a diverse coalition of New Yorkers who are standing up for religious freedom.

Re: J Street - Liberty Walk for Religious Freedom
J Street rocks, but I don't think I'll be able to do that event, since I'm running in the Race for the Cure that morning. Here are a couple of other related events:
Friday September 10, 7:15 (sundown) to 10:00 PM:
Candlelight Vigil
Join New York Neighbors for American Values:
On the eve of the 9/11 anniversary, we will join together in support of the American constitutional values of religious freedom, diversity, and equality, and in support of the rights of Muslim Americans to build a community center at 51 Park Place, near Ground Zero
Location: Meet at the intersection of Church Street and Park Place, Manhattan.
Please bring candles and American flags, but no signs.
Please wear white in solidarity and peace.
We are gathering in peaceful, respectful remembrance and unity.
Program will include music and words of wisdom from faith leaders and elected officials.
Sponsored by New York Neighbors for American Values, a new coalition of civic, cultural, and religious groups in support of inclusion and equality.

Saturday September 11
Responding to the announced plans by the Tea Party and others to use 9/11 to spread anti-Muslim hatred and racism, the NYC Coalition to Stop Islamophobia has announced a March and Rally to counter this attempt to make hatred and bigotry the key legacy of the 9/11 tragedy.
A recent press conference held at City Hall by the Islamic Leadership Council of New York, representing 50+ mosques and community centers around the city, emphasized that the attack on Park51 is not unique – the wave of anti-Muslim hatred is truly national, with political and physical attacks on Muslims in many places.
This will be a dignified respectful event, with appropriate signs, banners, and chants against racism and in defense of people’s rights.
1 pm: Gather on east side of City Hall, at foot of Brooklyn Bridge. March to Rally site:
2 pm: Rally: Park Place and Church Street, Manhattan
