If the DNC picks New York they should Drop Dead!

Now that the Republicans have picked the Twin Cities as their convention spot in 2008, it is the Democrats' turn. They only have two cities of choose from, since their third choice was the Twin Cities.

So, we are left with Denver and New York. Usually, I would be ecstatic that New York was in the top two of anything, I love N.Y. If the convention is in New York I will be psyched. Now, these reasons would be totally selfish, and I really hope that the convention is not in my hometown.

The reason New York is not a good choice is because if the Democrats think they can win in 08, New York should be a lock by March. So, should the surrounding states. The Republicans picked what I think is a strategically important city. I know Minnesota has the longest streak of voting for Democrats, but it is much more of a swing state today then New York or its neighbors. Democrats need to do the same thing and put their convention in a swing state. Remember 2004, when the swing state of Massachusetts went to John Kerry - without the convention being in Boston, Democrats would have never won that state. Seriously, Boston was the DNC smoking crack. Hey I think Moscow and Havana put up bids too, let’s go there.

Now, Denver isn’t New York, but what is?

Mr. Dean, please go to the mile high city and stay out of New York. I know, Bloomie and Giuliani, maybe in the thick of it in 08, but if we have to defend New York we are not going to win. For once, will the Democratic Party go for broke and take a risk? Sometimes I think you guys in the DNC would rather lose by 2 points than take a chance and win or lose big.

Colorado is a swing state, so are its neighbors. A convention in Denver could really swing support from states like New Mexico, Arizona as well as Colorado to the nominee. Mr. Dean, you even said yourself that you wanted to make Democrats viable in each state, so let’s do it; that starts with picking Denver next month.

GO Denver!!!

P.S.

P.S. I know that there are some union problems in Denver Hotels. Lets not let that make us choose New York over Denver, if the DNC is going to pick NYC find a better reason. I have heard that is what puts NYC in the lead.

How about New Orleans? A

How about New Orleans? A city that really needs the help and a State that used to vote Democratic. The Dems really need to broaden their base. I hope they reach out to the middle class and working class voters in 2008, that is their real base, not liberal special interest groups.

New Orleans or Denver it is

I'm all for having the convention elsewhere; these things always serve as showcases, and with all due respect to Boston, holding the 2004 shindig there wasn't helpful at all.

That would be a stroke of Genius!

How about if we start a DNC-NOLA 08 campaign. I mean, c'mon! That would be so monumental a move for them Go to the south? And Nallins? C'mon!

A state doesn't vote based on the convention being there

I think its an insult to the voters in these states to even imply that they'll be more likely to vote for one candidate or party simply because a nominating convention is held in one of their cities. It doesn't work that way. Its not like Dukakis carried Georgia when the Democratic convention was in Atlanta did he? Dole didn't carry California when the GOP convention was in San Diego. Give me one time where a swing state swung the right way because they hosted that party's convention that year?

The last time the Democrats had a non-incumbent win the White House was Bill Clinton in '92 and where was the Democratic Convention? Here in New York City, thats where. I still fondly remember Bill, Hillary and Chelsea holding hands and walking through the basement level of Macy's to get to the Garden. It was quite a visual. NYC is a great place to have a convention. Better to have it here than in Denver, which is way out in the Rockies where there will be time zone issues. Besides most of the delegates will be from the central and east and will have major travel issues getting all the way out there. You want to have a convention where it is most convenient to have it, and nowhere is more convenient than New York.

Why it might not be New York

There is a practical reason though why the Democratic Convention may well be in Denver in 2008 and not in NYC. That is that NYC has a mayor, Michael Bloomberg, who may well be a presidential candidate himself as an independent. There may be some DNC officials who will not want to take the chance of having their convention being hosted by one of the candidates they'll be running against in the general election.

Now if Bloomberg swears on a stack of bibles, and on his children's lives that he's not going to run for President, and will not change his mind, maybe they'll still consider NYC.

What are we doing in Iraq? Saddam is dead, we found no weapons of mass destruction, and we know that Iraq didn’t attack us — we need to get out.
