NY Times Editorial Board endorsing Steve in his 2006 run:
"Mr. Harrison...is an attractive alternative to Mr. Fossella in his own right. Mr. Harrison has a presence in both sides of the district; he resides in Brooklyn, while his mother and sister live on Staten Island.
As chair of Community Board 10 in Brooklyn, he demonstrated leadership as he oversaw one of the city's largest efforts to contain overdevelopment through rezoning. He has a good command of the issues, and a feel for the concerns of the district. Mr. Harrison surprised many with his passion and keen intelligence in a series of debates with Mr. Fossella. The distinctions could not be clearer. We endorse Mr. Harrison for Congress."
In 2006, Steve Harrison ran against a Bush rubber stamp Republican, and was outspent 10:1. Facing the GOP smear machinery, without help from the DCCC, he got 43% of the vote. Pretty respectable for a supposed unwinnable seat, and this time the DCCC may help.
I like Steve's decency, his knowledge of neighborhood, and as its product, he would care about who and how he serves. I'm very high on Steve for the job of Congressman.
As well, unhappy about the turf grab by the Brooklyn Democratic Leader into Staten Island and Bay Ridge, with his choice of term-limited, City Council Member Domenic Recchia, as primary challenger. A more uphill choice for the general election, given the Island's provincial voting record for its own.
Only Steve has been doing the work on Staten Island.
Both Leader Lopez and Recchia pushed through ultra-conservative Noach Dear for Civil Court Judge, in a low turnout election. Rated unqualified by the NY Bar Association, a homophobe and a bigot, if you have proof the unethical Dear ever practiced law, please let me know.
The New York Times has called Dear "a perpetual candidate of shifting political stripes." However inconvenient he was to the Party, the court and its grievances needed to be treated with more respect.
Without talking more inside baseball, this election is as important for finding a new high ground in Brooklyn party politics, as well for our national interests.
No secret that we need bigger margins in Congress, with votes that are principled. We need to maximize the opportunities to turn the House and New York City bluer where we can. Simple party margins don't work anymore in this age of obstructionist politics.
Come meet Steve, and learn more.
Even if you live outside of Brooklyn, please consider a donation to show Steve's strength as a candidate. I typically don't ask for donations, so, if you're able, please consider making this one.
If you would like to donate to Steve's campaign, please make your check payable to Friends of Steve Harrison and mail to Rosalie Caliendo, 2400 East 3rd Street, Apt 605, Brooklyn, NY 11223. You can donate directly at his campaign website: http://steveharrisonforcongress.com, or through ActBlue.
