On Thursday, January 4th, at 6:00 p.m., the Center for Architecture – home to the New York City chapter of the American Institute of Architects – will screen “Brooklyn Matters,†a documentary by Brooklyn filmmaker, urban planner and historian Isabel Hill. The timely and urgent film exposes how powerful interests are circumventing community participation and skirting legal protections to push the “Atlantic Yards†project forward at any cost.
Ms. Hill, a Brooklyn resident, and former planner in New York City’s Department of City Planning, directed the award-winning “Made in Brooklyn,†a documentary about the borough’s manufacturing industry.
From the American Institute of Architects website:
Brooklyn is distinctly different and yet such an important part of New York City. The names itself brings to mind tree-lined streets, finely carved rowhouses and beautiful churches and diverse communities, rich in cultural life and ethnic heritage. On the upswing, vibrant and rebuilding itself, Brooklyn faces a new challenge—an uncommon development, designed by world famous architect Frank Gehry, that threatens to redirect Brooklyn’s future and reshape its identity.

Given my recent near fame on discussing Somalia, it is appropriate for me to bring this event to your attention:
Somalia: Is a regional war inevitable?
Said Samatar, Professor of African History,Rutgers University
In the last days of December, Ethiopian fighter jets bombed Somalia's Mogadishu airport - a move said to be in defense of Somalia's Federal Transitional Government based in Baidoa. Thousands were reported dead as the Ethiopians routed the Union of Islamic Courts,
in a move that had full U.S. support. Martial law has been declared and Ethiopia has announced its intention to remain in the country for at least several weeks.
Experts on the region fear that Somalia conflagration could set off a fierce proxy war, fueled by the rival interests of 10 other countries, including Eritrea, Kenya, and Djibouti.
Salim Lone, former spokesman for the UN mission in Iraq in 2003, recently warned: "If this war continues, it will affect the whole region and also do serious harm to US interests and threaten Kenya, the only island of stability in this corner of Africa."

This comes from Democracy for America and there are events all over the nation:
What part of "NO" is hard to understand? In the last election, America sent a clear message to President Bush to change our course in Iraq, but all he wants to do is step on the gas.
On Wednesday, President Bush will announce his new way forward and it will sound a lot like "stay the course." Twenty thousand more troops and another set of unrealistic benchmarks used as talking points is more of the same. Even America's new commander in Iraq, Lieutenant General Raymond Odierno, says Bush's plan will take "two to three years" to put us on the right track.
This Thursday we must stand up and tell George Bush, "No!" Democracy for America is partnering with True Majority Action and several other progressive organizations to purge the surge. Will you help by setting up an event in your neighborhood?
http://www.AmericaSaysNo.org/DFA
Some of the events that have already been set up are candle-light vigils honoring the fallen. Others are honk and wave mini-rallies at busy intersections or public spaces. Either way, these events work great for as few as three people or as many as five hundred. What is most important is that these events happen on Thursday night just 24 hours after the President's speech. Congress and the media need to see a quick response and a clear message that America says no more troops for Iraq.

Judgment Days: Lyndon Baines Johnson, Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Laws That Changed America
(Houghton Mifflin, 2005)
With author Nick Kotz; moderated by
Sam Freedman, Columbia University School of Journalism
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nick Kotz draws on a wealth of newly available sources – from President Johnson’s telephone conversations to FBI wiretap logs – to provide the first definitive account of the relationship between these two great leaders.
Celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. Opposites in almost every way, suspicious of each other at first, President Johnson and Dr. King were thrust together in the aftermath of John F. Kennedy’s assassination. Both men sensed an opportunity and began a delicate dance of accommodation that moved them and the entire nation toward the historic Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

I previously posted on a Manhattan screening of the documentary "Brooklyn Matters," prompting Michael Bouldin to comment on the obvious irony of the venue for the event. However, I know of two people who went and were greatly impressed both by the film and by the discussion afterwards.
The next chance to see this film is at the Municipal Arts Society. Here are the details:
Thursday, January 18, 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.
Focusing on the planned Atlantic Yards development in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, this spirited documentary film reviews how the project gained approval, its potential impact on Brooklyn, and the politics surrounding one of the largest development proposals in the city’s history. The documentary — featuring candid interviews, strong opinions and lively characters — is an insightful and sometimes startling view of how land-use decisions are made. A discussion will follow.
Seating is limited and reservations are recommended. RSVP to rsvp@mas.org or 212-935-2075.

DISCUSSION
Prisoners: A Muslim and a Jew Across the Middle East Divide
They met in 1990 during the first Intifada—one was an American Jew, the author, who served as a prison guard in the largest prison in Israel; the other, a prisoner named Rafiq, who was a rising leader in the PLO. Despite their fears and prejudices, they began a dialogue that grew into a remarkable friendship—and now a remarkable book that confronts head-on the issues dividing the Middle East, but also shines a ray of hope on that dark, embattled region.

Author and conservationist Thomas Homer-Dixon suggests that the pressures we are putting on our planet are likely leading to an imminent breakdown in the economic, political, and ecological systems that sustain us. By examining the intertwined causes of these systemic crises—from growing energy shortages to yawning economic inequalities—his latest book, The Upside of Down: Catastrophe, Creativity, and the Renewal of Civilization, shows what we can learn from them and how we can mitigate them.

Stay the Course' or 'Cut and Run'? Strategic Considerations Regarding the Quantification of Climate Forcing by Anthropogenic Aerosols
Dr. Tad Anderson
University of Washington
This Seminar is Open to the Public...all are welcome to attend. Please bring a photo ID with you for entrance onto the Brookhaven National Labs site.
Overview:
Since the second year of the Ford Administration when Junge outlined the problem, atmospheric scientists have been engaged in a mission to beat down the uncertainties in Aerosol Climate Forcing. The intervening years have seen exponential increases in the number of scientist attacking this problem, the power of their instrumental and computational weaponry, and, of course, the overall cost of the mission. Publications have also increased exponentially, and yet, five Presidents and four party switches later, any semblance of victory remains elusive. Even our weakest enemy (the "direct forcing" problem), though targeted in well-armed field campaigns, has managed to stage repeated comebacks via such unanticipated tactics as the insertion of absorbing aerosol above boundary layer clouds, where its effects may be great and yet are almost impossible to measure. Meanwhile, the hydra-headed monster known as "indirect forcing", while surrendering tiny slivers of territory, has only grown in overall strength and incomprehensibility. Our great nation stands this very day at a turning point - a moment of decision. Shall we battle on with our bottom-up techniques, as the mad-dogs of the Red Party advocate? Shall we abandon the field to top-down (or inverse) methods, wherein we merely pick the forcing value that allows a climate model to fit the temperature record, as called for by the cowards of the Blue Party? Should we listen to those queer Third Party voices, urging, for example, approaches based on monitoring the heat content of the ocean or the albedo of the entire planet? These are trying and confusing times, and yet the choice is upon us. My goal in this presentation and the discussion to follow is not to recommend any particular course of action, but to help equip us to choose wisely. Specific topics will include: What do recent, so-called "observation-based" estimates of direct forcing tell us about the state of the science? What do we know about the accuracy of AERONET retrievals of absorption optical depth and fine-mode fraction? How does the notion of an aerosol/cloud continuum affect our observational and modeling strategies? Even though they cannot vote today, non-U.S. citizens are encouraged to come and participate - we need all the help we can get!

The Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative (Y2Y) is a prominent example of how conservationists are working to protect wide-ranging species across large landscapes and international borders. Two scholars, Drs. Charles Chester and Jodi Hilty, will offer insights into the formation of Y2Y and the science of "corridor ecology" that supports it. The discussion will also feature other examples of transborder conservation, ranging from the biological effects of a border wall between the US and Mexico, to peace parks on the Korean peninsula, to large "transboundary protected areas" in southern Africa.
Charles Chester is the author of Conservation Across Borders: Biodiversity in an Interdependent World, and teaches at Brandeis University and The Fletcher School at Tufts University. Jodi Hilty is a landscape ecologist and the Assistant Director of the Wildlife Conservation Society's North America Program. She is lead author of the book, Corridor Ecology: The Science and Practice of Linking Landscapes for Biodiversity Conservation.
