The midterm elections are approaching fast and you have the opportunity to get more involved in making sure that progressives turnout and vote this November.

People For the American Way needs your help in contacting our members to make sure our progressive voices are heard at the ballot box!

Over the past six years, we have seen an abuse of presidential powers undermining our country’s system of checks and balances, an erosion of fundamental civil liberties, irresponsible tax and spending policies and a disastrous foreign policy. It is time for a change – let’s make this A November to Remember!

People For the American Way has organized a series of phone banking nights to make focused calls to our members in key districts where important ballot measures and candidate races are taking place and WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Our first phone bank will be on Wednesday, October 4 from 6:00-9:00 pm at the PFAW Northeast Regional Office at 149 5th Avenue, 7th Floor, in New York City. Phone banking will continue every Monday – Thursday until the election on November 7. For those of us who enjoy New York City's built environment, Open House New York is a wonderful weekend. Great public and private buildings are opened up to give rare views of our City. This year, I'm told there will be tours of Subway power houses, of the Decayed hospital on Roosevelt Island, newly restored Federal Hall, the South Street Seaport Museum and Governors Island.

In previous years, I visited the Tweed Courthouse, the High Bridge Water Tower, the top of the Jefferson Market Courthouse Library Clock Tower (with great views of West Village mews and streets), the Grand Army Plaza Arch (which is truly a wonder inside) and to the Montalk Club, a late 19th Century super-decorated private club I'd never seen before.

Some of the best events are crowded. So plan ahead by visiting their website www.ohny.org In addition, they seek volunteers to help manage the lines. Volunteers put in a 4 hour shift at one building (and then get to jump the lines at others).

This was sent to me by MoveOn.org. They are working DAMNED hard to win Congress. Give them some help and have some fun as well:

Hi guys. It's getting down to crunch time in our campaign to rid Congress of corporate cronies,

incompetent buffoons, Bush rubber-stamps, self-righteous conservatives, Iraq warmongers, and

pedophiles (also known, collectively, as the 'Republican Congress').

It's also almost Friday night, a traditional time of revelry and socializing.

So we're combining these two imperatives this week with a night of critical volunteering and

laid-back drinking. We will be running a phone-banking shift here at our Carroll Gardens

campaign office from 8pm to 10pm (calling MoveOn members in New York and Arizona, to get them

involved on the campaign), and then heading as a group out to the local progressive watering

hole, Abilene. It should be a good chance to meet local MoveOn volunteers, make a difference in

this year's election, and do something different on a Friday night. Here are the specifics:

Who: You, of course, but also any other friends or family you happen to have who are also fed up

with our Republican government, and willing to do more than just complain about it!

Was talking to our MoveOn.org guest and it seems that they are hitting a harder period for phonebanking. The initial strong response from volunteers has reached something of a burnout level. It isn't that the phone calls aren't effective. It's just that they have started running low on volunteers.

With the election coming up, we really need these phone banks fully staffed. If you haven't yet committed to a candidate or activity between now and November 7th, please join in the MoveOn.org phone bank. Here is their announcement of a special, "emergency" night of phonebanking:

It's an emergency. With just 22 days left until Election Day, we're on the brink of a historic opportunity to take back Congress.

When we started Call for Change, the experts said only a handful of races were in play. But voters really want a change after the disaster of the last six years, and as a result a whopping 26 races are in a dead heat. There's just one problem: to take advantage of this once-in-a-generation opportunity, we'll need way more volunteers than we currently have.

So this Thursday, we're holding an emergency phonebank at the new MoveOn office in Brooklyn to call MoveOn members and ask them to join Call for Change. These are fun calls to make—you'll be talking to great people. And each new volunteer your recruit can call dozens or even hundreds of voters before the election.

MoveOn.org is the force Republicans seem to fear most right now, at least that is how I interpret their nearly hysterical whining about MoveOn.org. Want to join in on the MoveOn effort to oust as many Republicans as possible? Here's MoveOn.org's latest GOTV effort:

Can one sundae change the world? Well, no. But 10,000 of them just might. This weekend, MoveOn members are gathering near Brooklyn to enjoy delicious ice cream sundaes and make get-out-the-vote calls to progressive voters in key districts nationwide.

These "taste of victory" phone parties are a fun way to make a direct impact on the coming election. And with only 18 days go and dozens of races down to the wire, this is one dessert you shouldn't skip.

A neighbor in NY is hosting at their place and you're invited. Click here to R.S.V.P.

Here are the details of the party nearest you:

Location: 24th St & Second Ave. Apt 2L (in NY)

Time: Saturday, 21 Oct 2006, 11:30 AM

Develop, Don't Destroy Brooklyn is putting on their second annual walkathon to raise money for their legal fund. This legal fund is the main reason why there has been ANY public involvement in the Atlantic Yards project whatsoever. Joy and I participated last year and had a great time. We will be there again this year. From DDDB:

The court battle against the "Atlantic Yards" hinges on our ability to fund our legal team. Our legal case is strong, but we can't win without your help in raising money and awareness.

The walk is less than two miles, and starts at noon at the Prospect Park Bandshell (Propsepct Park West and 9th Street).

The day’s events will include hundreds of walkers, live bands and other talent, children's activities, music, food and booths at the Bandshell.

Walk Don't Destroy 2 is a fantastic opportunity to help fund the DDDB legal campaign through a fun, interactive and exciting event.

REGISTER TODAY.

And DON'T FORGET! The deadline for YOU to have your say on Ratner's plan is Sept. 29th. PLEASE be a part of the process.

Former IND president and current Community Board 6 member Devin Cohen sends out this message to all Brooklyn activists:

A joint Democratic/WFP phonebanking effort is scheduled for Wed. Oct. 25th, 6-8 PM at 2-4 Nevins St. (the WFP offices). Anyone who wants to participate can email me and I will pass along the info: mole333_at_gmail_dot_com

According to the WFP blog, these efforts focus on the NY-24, NY-29 and CT-7 races, which are among the three hottest races in the country. Giving a couple of hours to this effort will do wonders!

WFP also has a phone-from-home effort. You can sign up for that by clicking here.
