HUD Admits Defeat at Prospect Plaza Houses:
Plans to Sell Public Property to Private Developer

We're being hit with overdevelopment for the rich but destruction of housing for the poor."
-- Bill Batson, Co-Chair, CB8 Fire Safety Committee
Assembly Representative Candidate, 57th District

"If a country can be judged by how it treats its most vulnerable, then we are providing a poor example. We should not act like a patchwork of rich and poor neighborhoods, or Red states and Blue states. If we are one country, we have to act that way and stand up for the neediest among us."
-- Chris Owens, Congressional Candidate, 11th District

Brooklyn -- Back at the end of the last century, the federal government developed a plan to renovate the Prospect Plaza houses. The buildings were vacated, and the buildings sat unused. Judging from their actions, NYCHA didn't seem to think the $22 million allocated for the project was important enough to use. HUD has now admitted its failure in the NYCHA Annual Plan for Fiscal Year 2007. Instead of using money budgeted for renovation, it has decided to privatize the remaining buildings. The document, dated April 21, 2006, states:

"NYCHA will dispose of Prospect Plaza to a developer for the mixed financed development and rehabilitation on all three Prospect Plaza properties."

The missing millions seem tragic, but the loss of taxpayer money is not nearly as horrible as the cost in human lives. Between 1999 and 2003 tenants of the 365 apartments were moved to other New York City public housing projects to make way for renovation of three towers - two 15-story and one 12 story building. These residents were promised a better life, but will there be public oversight? What is the community input in the new construction? NYCHA promises the former tenants new housing, but can they even find them? Given the very poor record of NYCHA over the course of a decade, it is rather unlikely that the people who need it will get any help.

Featuring a new song from the choir --
ARE YOU MY LOVER OR ARE YOU MY LOGO?

In this Fabulous Worship, we plan to reflect on The Shopocalypse Tour. We took two buses across the country last December - trying to Save Christmas from the Shopocalypse!

Since then the church faithful have been singing and preaching in California and in Switzerland, before returning by way of Columbus, Ohio (which is like the Lake of Hellfire, only less interesting). It was there the Reverend confronted Victoria's Secret shareholders at their annual meeting. Their MILLION (stupid semi-porn) CATALOGUES A DAY come from clear-cut, virgin, boreal forests.

Now back home - We have joined the Wal-Mart Free NYC campaign, trying to keep the Bronx out of the big box. The retail Devil has even set up a fake but very well funded Bronx Chamber of Commerce. Evil never rests. Will somebody give us a CHANGE-A-LUJAH!

Wednesday, June 21: Traditional Phone Banking – Seize our State Senate!

6:00 - 8:30 PM
420 Lexington Ave (at 43rd St), Suite 360
Bring photo ID to sign in at front desk.
Please arrive on time for orientation.

What will we be doing? We'll use landlines to do low-pressure Voter ID and/or Volunteer Recruitment calling to dramatically increase Democratic voter turnout in the most competitive New York State Senate races.

Why care about the State Senate? If you care about fair elections, education, transportation, the environment, healthcare, security, and other major issues in New York, you should care a lot about winning back the New York State Senate. Now that reformer Eliot Spitzer is likely to be New York's next governor, it's even more important to have a Democratic legislature in place.

Can we win? Yes, we can. We’re just four seats from Democratic control for the first time since the mid 1960s. No, that’s not a typo: the 60’s. In fact, most pundits think that it's just a matter of time before heavily Democratic New York State finally ousts the GOP. But these are entrenched interests. They're going to spend money like crazy to stay in power. We need to take full advantage of popular outcry this year and overwhelm them with turnout.

If caller turnout is strong, we hope to establish this as a weekly activity.
