Celebrate Wal-Martlessness with us Sunday 3pm From Wal-Mart No Way to the neighborhood believers, from living wage shouters to Rego Park Queens labor heroes – the anti-Wal-Mart community will be honored by Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Gospel Choir on Sunday March 26th at 3 PM, St. Mark's in the Bowery, 10th and 2nd Avenue. Those of you who have done the right thing – PREPARE FOR YOUR SAINTHOOD! The preacher and the singers have for ten years defended healthy neighborhoods, especially indy shops and community gardens. The monoculture of chain stores and big boxes – that's the Devil! DELIVER US FROM EVIL! Recently during the cross-country Shopocalypse tour, the Reverend and the church exorcised the Wal-Mart Home Office in Bentonville, Arkansas. Surrounded by corporate police in their SUV's, the church sang and prayed for today's freedom – freedom from the brutality of profits at all costs. CHANGE-A-LUJAH! DO WE HAVE A WITNESS! I am coming in late (closer to 9pm) but I will definitely be there. All the details are after the jump.

The recent statements by the Bush Administration in support of a UN peacekeeping force, and possibly sending in NATO as an interim measure, have only come about because of the pressure of citizens all across this country.

Unfortunately, the security situation in Darfur continues to deteriorate and a war with neighboring Chad is looming. In the UN, there are new obstacles to sending in a UN peacekeeping force. It is therefore imperative that we continue to pressure our government to use every legitimate tool at its disposal to bring about the deployment of a UN peacekeeping force.

In February 2003, the City of London began charging a fee to all private vehicles entering the area's central business district. Termed "congestion pricing," the policy has resulted in a number of outcomes that have produced a net benefit for the city's quality of life. Reduced traffic, more effective mass transit, improved local air quality and safety, and not least, considerable revenues for the city have led to the policy's wide acceptance, and even support for its expansion.

Chelsea Neighbors United to End the War will present the award-winning documentary "Weapons of Mass Deception" by Danny Schechter at the historic Hudson Guild, 441West 26th Street (between 9th and 10th Avenues) in Manhattan.

Danny Schechter will speak about the film and answer questons.

"Weapons of Mass Deception" is a 100 minute non-fiction film that explores the story that there were two wars going on in Iraq - one was fought with armies of soldiers, bombs and a fearsome military force. The other was fought alongside it with cameras, satellites, armies of journalists and propaganda techniques. One war was rationalized as an effort to find and disarm WMDs - Weapons of Mass Destruction;
the other was carried out by even more powerful WMDs, Weapons of Mass Deception.

Mr. Schechter, a Nieman Fellow in Journalism at Harvard University, and radio news director turned CNN and Emmy Award winning ABC News Producer, Schechter wears several hats at the same time. He is now an award-winning independent investigative journalist and filmmaker as well as an outspoken author.

Tickets are $5 in advance, $7 at the door. Call 212-726-1385 for reservations or more information.

Exploring New Paths to a Sound Basic Education The NY State Court of Appeals affirmed in 2003 NY State Supreme Court Justice Leland DeGrasse's decision that NYC schools do not receive sufficient resources from the state to provide pubclic school students with the sound basic education the State Constitution mandates. Justice De Grasse ordered the state to provide an additional $5.6 billion in operating aid and $9.2 billion for construction. Pataki, taking the typical Bush-Republican anti-education line, is refusing to pay and has appealed the decision. The State Legislature has yet to provide a single cent (though see THIS EVENT for activism for education) What can WE do? For a start, join Americans for Democratic Action in meeting and questioning: Jan Atwell, Policy Analyst, NY City Council Education Committee Jessica Garcia, Director of Outreach, Campaign for Fiscal Equity March 30, 6 PM 275 Seventh Ave. 15th Floor Manhattan Refreshments and verbal fireworks will be served.

You’re invited this Sunday, April 23, to a House Party for Chris Owens, Candidate for Congress, of Brooklyn’s historic 11th Congressional District from 2:00 – 4:00 PM at the home of Marsha Borenstein 316 State St. between Smith & Hoyt Sts. Come and meet Chris, catch up with friends, and join us for some food & drink from Sahadi’s. Find out why Chris carries the SPIRITUAL DNA that guarantees the people of the 11th District: * A loud voice speaking against the costly and immoral war in Iraq. * A strategist to vigorously oppose the use of "Eminent Domain" to bulldoze our neighborhoods. * A long-term education advocate who will keep the fight for greater education funding. * A strong New York Voice on the committee responsible for wages, pensions, worker safety, etc. * A committed advocate for improved Medicare for all. * A restorative vision of appropriate priorities to national and foreign policy putting quality, peace and people first. * An aggressive advocate for holding the Executive Branch accountable for its actions, including supporting the impeachment of President George Bush. Grassroots organizing and support means everything to this campaign. CHRIS FACES a PRIMARY CHALLENGE from WELL-FUNDED OPPONENTS. Help us build the momentum for the September 12th Democratic Primary, the winner of which is favored to become our next Congressional Representative. PLEASE CONTRIBUTE WHAT YOU CAN by BRINGING YOUR CHECKBOOK & MORE IMPORTANTLY your THIRST for OUR COMMUNITY to THE PARTY. Or you can contribute online through Act Blue. Please forward to your friends and family! It’s our district – time to represent!

Stopping global warming is not just about saving the environment for the hunters, fisherman, hikers, and other outdoor enthusiasts of today and tomorrow. Global warming is a matter of national security. Will we live in a world where we must fight our neighbors for fresh water and food?
