Parents to Begin Telephone Campaign to Seek CFE Money.
Tell NYC's Four Republican State Senators to Fund Our Schools.

Please join AQE, Cynthia Nixon, Public Advocate Betsy
Gotbaum, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer,
Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, City
Council Education Committee Chair Robert Jackson and
others to kick off 1-866-KIDS-NYC, a new hotline AQE
is setting up.

The hotline will be available for anyone to call and
will direct calls to the four NYC members of the State
Senate Majority. We will also be launching a new web
campaign on www.ourkidscantwait.org to generate faxes
to these four senators. We hope that calls and faxes
generated over the next week will push the Senate to
build a CFE solution into this year's state budget to
be voted on by April 1st.

Please join us to launch this exciting new campaign!

Celebrate Wal-Martlessness with us Sunday 3pm

From Wal-Mart No Way to the neighborhood believers, from living wage shouters to Rego Park Queens labor heroes – the anti-Wal-Mart community will be honored by Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Gospel Choir on Sunday March 26th at 3 PM, St. Mark's in the Bowery, 10th and 2nd Avenue. Those of you who have done the right thing – PREPARE FOR YOUR SAINTHOOD!

The preacher and the singers have for ten years defended healthy neighborhoods, especially indy shops and community gardens. The monoculture of chain stores and big boxes – that's the Devil! DELIVER US FROM EVIL!

Recently during the cross-country Shopocalypse tour, the Reverend and the church exorcised the Wal-Mart Home Office in Bentonville, Arkansas. Surrounded by corporate police in their SUV's, the church sang and prayed for today's freedom – freedom from the brutality of profits at all costs. CHANGE-A-LUJAH! DO WE HAVE A WITNESS!

The recent statements by the Bush Administration in support of a UN peacekeeping force, and possibly sending in NATO as an interim measure, have only come about because of the pressure of citizens all across this country.

Unfortunately, the security situation in Darfur continues to deteriorate and a war with neighboring Chad is looming. In the UN, there are new obstacles to sending in a UN peacekeeping force. It is therefore imperative that we continue to pressure our government to use every legitimate tool at its disposal to bring about the deployment of a UN peacekeeping force.

In February 2003, the City of London began charging a fee to all private vehicles entering the area's central business district. Termed "congestion pricing," the policy has resulted in a number of outcomes that have produced a net benefit for the city's quality of life. Reduced traffic, more effective mass transit, improved local air quality and safety, and not least, considerable revenues for the city have led to the policy's wide acceptance, and even support for its expansion.

Chelsea Neighbors United to End the War will present the award-winning documentary "Weapons of Mass Deception" by Danny Schechter at the historic Hudson Guild, 441West 26th Street (between 9th and 10th Avenues) in Manhattan.

Danny Schechter will speak about the film and answer questons.

"Weapons of Mass Deception" is a 100 minute non-fiction film that explores the story that there were two wars going on in Iraq - one was fought with armies of soldiers, bombs and a fearsome military force. The other was fought alongside it with cameras, satellites, armies of journalists and propaganda techniques. One war was rationalized as an effort to find and disarm WMDs - Weapons of Mass Destruction;
the other was carried out by even more powerful WMDs, Weapons of Mass Deception.

Mr. Schechter, a Nieman Fellow in Journalism at Harvard University, and radio news director turned CNN and Emmy Award winning ABC News Producer, Schechter wears several hats at the same time. He is now an award-winning independent investigative journalist and filmmaker as well as an outspoken author.

Tickets are $5 in advance, $7 at the door. Call 212-726-1385 for reservations or more information.

Exploring New Paths to a Sound Basic Education

The NY State Court of Appeals affirmed in 2003 NY State Supreme Court Justice Leland DeGrasse's decision that NYC schools do not receive sufficient resources from the state to provide pubclic school students with the sound basic education the State Constitution mandates. Justice De Grasse ordered the state to provide an additional $5.6 billion in operating aid and $9.2 billion for construction.

Pataki, taking the typical Bush-Republican anti-education line, is refusing to pay and has appealed the decision. The State Legislature has yet to provide a single cent (though see THIS EVENT for activism for education)

What can WE do? For a start, join Americans for Democratic Action in meeting and questioning:

DFNYC is proud to invite you to a Meet and Greet with Ned Lamont, who is running against Joe Lieberman in the Democratic Primary. Many Connecticut DFA members and coalition groups are supporting Ned. Join us on Friday to find out why.

Like most Americans, Ned is tired of being represented by a senator who consistently supports the President, especially when that senator is a “Democrat.
