With Bush & Co. exporting democracy abroad while dismantling it here at home, it's time for progressives to stand up and take your democracy back. "Saving Our Democracy" brings together 20 of the nation's leading activists and authors to audit the state of American democracy and to offer real ideas on how to save it. Through the day's eight panels, "Saving Our Democracy" will cover every major domestic democracy issue from voter suppression and religious McCarthyism to government secrecy and the failing media.

By seeking approval from the City Council to build the new Gateway Mall at the Bronx Terminal Market and failing to identify the tenants of the proposed mall, developers are providing a "backdoor" for Walmart and BJs to escape scrutiny of their labor and business practices. Tom De Luca, co-author of Liars! Cheaters! Evildoers!, will be at Demos for a lunch-time discussion about his latest book that charts the rise of what the authors label as the "demonization" of American politics. Showing how political campaigns often neglect debates over policy in favor of fights over the private character and personal lives of politicians, political interests are still served by this style of politics, but democracy, the authors contend, is the loser. DeLuca will discuss the distinctly American qualities of "demonization", how their frequency and intensity has grown in the last four decades and ways in which democracy and freedom of speech can coexist in a productive, idea-rich environment.

On Thursday, January 26th at 6:30 PM, Develop, Don't Destroy Brooklyn, the Fifth Ave. Committee, Park Slope Greens, and Park Slope Neighbors invite you to a community forum on Forest City Ratner's Atlantic Yard's Project.

This is a controversial project that makes us face just what our vision for Brooklyn is--17 giant skyscrapers in the heart of Brooklyn or our traditional, unique brownstones. This project also cuts to the heart of private property rights since Bloomberg has threatened to use eminent domain to force private citizens to sell their property ot another private citizen, a clear misuse of eminent domain.

Come and discuss this project and ideas for a Liveable Brooklyn rather than a Brooklyn bought and sold in backroom deals for the profits of developers.

Lambda Independent Democrats will kick off the new year with a forum featuring the candidates for the hotly contested 11th congressional district seat being vacated by Major Owens on Thursday, January 26, 2006 at the Montauk Club, 25 8th Avenue at Lincoln Place. This is the first time in a decade that there will be an open congressional seat in Brooklyn, so join us in hearing from candidates Carl Andrews, Yvette Clarke, Chris Owens, Nick Perry and David Yassky.

I want to add my personal comment on this race. Many Progressives love to complain about the weaknesses of the Democratic Party. Well, hotly contested primaries like this one are YOUR CHANCE to influence the Democratic Party. This race pits candidates linked to the corrupt machine against progressives and semi-progressives. People who complain about the party but fail to get involved on this level should just keep their mouths shut. Come help reform politics in Brooklyn by attending this forum and questioning these candidates yourself. Then support the candidate YOU like. Otherwise, I don't want to hear you complain.

Rally for Darfur, Wed. Feb.8th, at US Mission to UN

AFRICA ACTION is sponsoring a rally in New
York on Wednesday, February 8th at 12 noon, opposite
the temporary offices of the U.S. Mission to the UN on
45th Street, between 3rd and Lexington Avenues.

It is imperative that we in the New York area make our
voices heard to stop the genocide taking place in
Darfur. In fact, all news reports indicate that the
violence is increasing. The United States must act and
it must do so now while it holds the presidency of the
United Nations Security Council during the month of
February.

The focus of the rally is to bring pressure to bear on
the U.S. government to present a resolution to the
Security Council authorizing a substantial UN
peacekeeping force in Darfur. This is the only
measure that can protect the desperate people of
Darfur at the present time. The New York Times
reported on January 28 that, "Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice expressed support for the idea this
month." Let us send the message that the Bush
Administration must make this a reality.
