A message from DFNYC member David Robinson:
Hello all -
Our next Any Soldier street drive, held in partnership with the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture and Old First Reformed Church, is scheduled for this Saturday, Nov. 19 in front of Old First on 7th Avenue at Carroll Street in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Please come by if you can to write a letter or postcard to our neighbors in uniform and to donate nonperishable, canned or microwaveable food, personal care products, winter gloves/hats/blankets or any of the other items listed on the attached flyer.
As always, if you can donate some time to help during the day, especially if you can give me a ride home especially after the drive, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm 10 minutes away from the church, but car services are often unwilling to take me with all the donated items. so If you have a car and can help me out at or about 5:30pm on Saturday, you would be a lifesaver.

PHILIPSTOWN FOR DEMOCRACY SUNDAY, November 20 from 2 to 4 PM at DESMOND FISH LIBRARY Meeting Room (enter through the main library entrance) Rte. 403 at Rte. 9D, Garrison
We will watch the film WAL-MART: The High Cost of Low Price
By Robert Greenwald (director of Outfoxed, Unconstitutional, and Uncovered: the Whole Truth about the Iraq War)
There is no shortage of statistical data testifying to Wal-Mart’s mammoth scale: Wal-Mart is the world’s largest corporation, the world’s largest employer and China’s sixth largest export market. Wal-Mart is rezoning America, setting wage standards and conducting diplomacy with other nations -- overtaking all its rivals as the world-transforming economic institution of our time. With a non-union, low-benefit, high turnover workforce of more than 1.2 million U.S. workers, Wal-Mart exerts a powerful downward pressure upon both the wages it pays directly and those of its competitors. Wal-Mart is a veritable engine of income inequality: it is therefore the most important social policy innovator in the United States today.
Is Wal-Mart the template for our future?
“An engrossing, muckraking documentary about the retail giant that's been called ‘the world's largest, richest and probably meanest corporation.’

The Sierra Club and the Brooklyn Bridge Park Defense Fund along with nine Brooklyn Associations will hold the first citizens' Town Hall Meeting for the Brooklyn Bridge Park.
When: Tuesday, November 29, 7 PM
Where: Congregation Mt. Sinai, Brooklyn Heights (intersection of Clinton, Tillary Street, and Cadman Plaza West)
Directions by Subway: one block east of the 2/3 subway station at Clark Street or three blocks north on Court Street from the 4/5 subway station at Borough Hall.
The purpose of this meeting is to present a real park plan for Brooklyn's waterfront, and to answer the community's questions about how to get back to a real park for Brooklynites - NOW.
"The State planners have hijacked our park" said Judi Francis, a 25 year resident of Brooklyn Heights and President of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Defense Fund. "They have turned what was supposed to be a park into a real estate development project and they are now trying to rush this development through to satisfy the interests of commercial
enterprise. The community has developed a great park plan that is affordable, is accessible to all Brooklynites, and has the recreational and cultural elements that the community has long desired. We can build that community-developed plan now."
"Brooklyn is the least served borough in terms of land dedicated to parks in all of New York City" said Ken Baer, Chair of the Sierra Club's Atlantic (NYS) Chapter. "Our goal is to help the citizens of Brooklyn secure a real park. The plan that the State has developed, with luxury housing located inside the park, does not serve the needs of Brooklyn, and it is a plan we reject. The community has a plan that has many outstanding features and is the plan we will discuss on November 29th."
Refreshments and baby sitting available.

Christopher will address issues of employment discrimination, police conduct (including search and seizure), federalism, the power of the executive branch and the separation of church and state. Afterwards, Tony will outline many of the opportunities that PFAW and the coalition of grassroots and progressive organizations, including NDM, have come up with to engage in this epic and winnable battle.
For those of you unfamiliar with Christopher Edelson, he began his career with the firm of Akin, Gump, Straus, Hauer & Feld in Washington, D.C. and worked with People for the American Way in representing clients in both federal and state courts in employment discrimination matters. In addition, Chris has successfully resolved many labor and employment matters before the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD).
