Start: 1:00 pm
The hotly contested election for Brooklyn surrogate judge reulted in a recount that has determined that Margharita Lopez-Torres, the reform candidate, has won. But the corrupt Brooklyn political machine is still trying to challenge her victory in court. Tomorrow, Monday September 26, 2005 at 1:00pm on the steps of City Hall, political leaders will speak on behalf of Judge Margarita Lopez-Torres. Her victory is based on voting tallies released by the New York City Board of Elections at a press conference on the steps of City Hall but legal challenges by the Norman machine are preventing the victory from being made official. Congressmembers Nydia Velazquez, Major Owens, and Ed Towns, along with Assemblymembers Darryl Towns and Rhoda Jacobs, Councilmembers Yvette Clarke and David Yassky, District Leaders Alan Fleishman, Jacob Gold, Jo Anne Simon, and Ralph Perfetto, will urge that the legal challenges to her election be withdrawn and that she be certified at once as the Democratic Party's nominee. Come show your support for reform politics in Brooklyn.

THE NEW YORK SALON PRESENTS:
Reflections on the Future: Thinking Politically in the 21st Century

The Graduate Center, The City University of New York
365 Fifth Avenue, NY, NY 10016

The New York Salon proudly announces Reflections on the Future, a public debate featuring renowned authors Russell Jacoby, Richard Sennett, and Frank Furedi, and moderated by WNYC's Brian Lehrer.

Reflections on the Future will examine the nature of politics at the start of the 21st Century. It seems that the traditional conception of Left and Right means less than ever. This trend was vividly apparent in the 2004 election, when few on either side were excited by their party‚s own platform. Political positions were defined negatively. Liberals were rarely for Kerry so much as against Bush. Conservatives were not so much united behind Bush as they were against liberals. Even the categories "liberal‚" and "conservative‚" seemed increasingly meaningless amidst independent, libertarian, neoconservative, moderate, or simply apathetic voters.

Home Rule Protest Rally

Where: Mayor Bloomberg's Town House
17 East 79th Street (between Fifth & Madison Avenues)

When: Saturday, October 1
12 Noon to 1:30 pm

Bloomberg said he favored repeal of the state Urstadt Law and restoration of home rule (city control) powers over rent control and rent stabilization to the City Council and Mayor.

But he recently changed his tune: now he says that Albany should control the rent laws that impact 2.5 million households in New York City - one in three New Yorkers lives in a rent-regulated apartment.

Bloomberg now thinks it is fine for Joe Bruno and the Republican State Senators from upstate to dictate how much rent and eviction protection we can have.

Without restoration of home rule, the city will continue to lose tens of thousands of affordable rent-regulated apartments to decontrol in the coming years.

We need a Mayor who will fight for home rule. A Mayor who understands why it is essential to the future health of the city to reverse the phase-out of our rent and eviction protection laws - before it is too late!

Join the Coalition for the Homeless, Met Council on Housing, Tenants & Neighbors, and many local organizations for a protest rally at Mayor Bloomberg's town house this coming Saturday, October 1, from 12 noon to 1:30 pm.

Please, come up to New Haven, CT to greet Howard Dean. It is a nice train ride from Grand Central Terminal, and New Haven is a fun town.

It takes place at the Belvedere, 70 Pond Lily Av, New Haven, CT 06515

Start: 3:00 pm
262 Court Street, Brooklyn, NY View Map Sunday, October 9, 3:00pm to 6:00pm As you know, our good friend Chris Owens is running for Congress in Brooklyn’s 11th District next year. You probably also know that Chris has always been on our side. He stood with us when we worked so hard for Howard Dean’s campaign. He has been an advocate for many progressive causes and, unlike many elected officials, he has stood courageously against Bruce Ratner’s ill-conceived Atlantic Yards development scheme. In fact, on this issue he is the ONLY candidate in this race who has stood by the community rather than the developer. Now it’s our turn to help Chris. Please join us for a wine & cheese reception on my roof on Sunday, October 9, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. As a salute to New Orleans and the Mississippi Delta, we will be playing lots of jazz, blues, zydeco and rhythm & blues. This will be the last party we will have on my roof this year, so please come to take advantage of the spectacular view and the nice weather while you can. I know that all of you have given a bit of money to various candidates this year. That’s why I have waited to do this after the September primary. Suggested donation: $25, $50, or more. Please give as generously as you can. Payment can be made by check or cash and can be presented at the door or via mail (by no later than October 6, but don’t mail cash) to: Wayne Brooks, 262 Court Street #2, Brooklyn, NY 11231. If you are unable to attend but would like to make a contribution, please go to Chris’s web site: http://voteowens.com/.

Christian theologian and author David Ray Griffin will present compelling evidence that challenges much of what we have been told about the horrific attacks of that day. Dr. Griffin will include new research especially for the New York audience based on recently released oral histories of firefighters and medical workers at the World Trade Center as well as video footage which clearly supports this research.

Hi, my name is Bidu Tashjian, I live in Cold Spring and have just recently returned from DC. I was attending a workshop on how to help protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. I am a passionate protector of this incredible wilderness area, having spent 10 days there. Anyway, Congress is still trying to drill for oil there and the latest attempt thanks to Tom Delay is to put a piece in the Budget Reconcilliation bill that would allow the drilling. This is a sneaky back-handed way the bad guys are using and Sue Kelly has a key vote in this matter. I visited with an aide of hers while in DC and while she has protected the Refuge from drilling in the past, has NOT made a committment to vote against the Budget amendent, thus would allow drilling.

We all know that winning back the White House requires winning back Ohio. While 2008 is still three years away, we have an incredible opportunity to reform Ohio’s broken political system right now and start to take back Congress and the White House.

Reform Ohio Now needs your help to Get Out The Vote on four crucial Ohio ballot initiatives that will make government more accountable and elections more trustworthy. These steps are vital if we hope to win seats in Ohio in ’06 or win the White House in ’08.

1. Create a bi-partisan election board. No more Ken Blackwells!
2. Require fair, representative legislative districts. No more gerrymandering.
3. Allow early absentee voting without cumbersome restrictions,
4. Reform campaign finance laws to eliminate corruption and rampant cronyism.

You can find more info at www.reformohionow.org.

Since this is an off-year election, strong turnout will be decisive. And your involvement will make a real difference.

Complaining doesn't bring down high insurance rates. Neither does shielding those who act wrongfully from responsibility for their actions.

Progress Toward Good Government or Power Grab Disguised as Reform:
Will New York's Budget Amendment Improve Governance?

- a debate sponsored by the Committee on State Affairs of the City Bar

Wednesday October 26, 2005, 6:30 PM
House of the Association, 42 West 44th Street

New Yorkers will make a critical decision this November when they vote on a complex and significant proposal to constitutionally change the state’s budget process. (For background info, click here to go to the Proposal One page here at the DFNYC website.) The City Bar has put together a panel discussion to hash out the pros and the cons of this ballot initiative. Proponents have argued that this is meaningful reform to streamline the budget process, while the opposition contends that it opens the door to more needless pork-barrel spending. Come hear both sides of the debate and be informed and ready to vote on Election Day.

2,000 brave servicemen and women have sacrificed their lives for the war in Iraq. Most of us cannot imagine what it must be like for their sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers. But as a nation, we can take a moment to send our gratitude and support to those families.

Democracy for America is joining with MoveOn and TrueMajority to host candlelight vigils across the country and offer our condolences to the families and friends of the American servicemen and women who have given their lives. The vigils will take place at 6:30 PM, Wednesday, October 26. To find a vigil in your community, visit:

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.
