But the corrupt Brooklyn political machine is still trying to challenge her victory in court. Her victory is based on voting tallies released by the New York City Board of Elections at a press conference on the steps of City Hall but legal challenges by the Norman machine are preventing the victory from being made official. Congressmembers Nydia Velazquez, Major Owens, and Ed Towns, along with Assemblymembers Darryl Towns and Rhoda Jacobs, Councilmembers Yvette Clarke and David Yassky, District Leaders Alan Fleishman, Jacob Gold, Jo Anne Simon, and Ralph Perfetto, will urge that the legal challenges to her election be withdrawn and that she be certified at once as the Democratic Party's nominee. New Yorkers will make a critical decision this November when they vote on a complex and significant proposal to constitutionally change the state’s budget process. The City Bar has put together a panel discussion to hash out the pros and the cons of this ballot initiative. Proponents have argued that this is meaningful reform to streamline the budget process, while the opposition contends that it opens the door to more needless pork-barrel spending. Come hear both sides of the debate and be informed and ready to vote on Election Day.

2,000 brave servicemen and women have sacrificed their lives for the war in Iraq. Most of us cannot imagine what it must be like for their sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers. But as a nation, we can take a moment to send our gratitude and support to those families.

Democracy for America is joining with MoveOn and TrueMajority to host candlelight vigils across the country and offer our condolences to the families and friends of the American servicemen and women who have given their lives.
