Join Marjorie (formerly host of the Brooklyn Kerry Meetup, now general political organizer and inspiration in Brooklyn) for her monthly meetup. Marjorie's meetups tend to have some excellent discussion, action alerts and guest speakers. NOTE: GIFFORD MILLER HAD TO CANCEL DUE TO A TELEVISED DEBATE Instead the meetup will cover Verified Voting issues: We have limited time to reach the media and elected officials about the dangers of electronic voting, and our preference for paper ballot precinct-based optical scanner, before purchasing decisions are made. We also plan to table at green markets, and elsewhere, for issues and candidacies. I also recommend getting Marjorie’s very informative newsletter which you can get by contacting her at: johnkerry57@covad.net

The August Any Soldier street drive, organized by Dave Robinson in partnership with the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture and Old First Reformed Church, is scheduled for Saturday, August 6th from 9:00am to 5:00pm in front of Old First, 7th Avenue and Carroll Street in Park Slope, Brooklyn. You can help by coming out and writing a letter or post card to our soldiers and making a donation in the form of tangible support for our people in Iraq and Afghanistan. Bring food, personal hygiene and other everyday consumer items our people over there so desperately need. Find out more what our soldiers are asking for at www.anysoldier.com/wheretosend

Dave Robinson, who spear-heads this monthly effort, sends his gratitude to all of you, an ever-growing number of New Yorkers who have very different political opinions but are united in support of our soldiers. He extends his especial thanks to Karen, Bernadette, Chuck, Tom, Robyn, Jill, Laura, and of course Reverend Meeter as well Lisel and Fiona at Brooklyn Ethical for all their help over the last few months.

For the upcoming drive, Dave is asking anyone with access to a car if they could please help him out, especially with getting him home with all the stuff on Saturday afternoon. If you or someone you know could help him at 5:30pm on Sat. Aug 6 take the donations from Old First to his home in Carroll Gardens, a 10-minute drive, he would so greatly appreciate it. So if you can help Dave help our soldiers, please email or call him.

Dave also welcomes help during the drive to help pass out flyers and talk to neighbors and fellow citizens about Any Soldier. Any time you can give would be fantastic and really makes a difference.

For more information or to volunteer email Dave at daverobinsonworks-at-yahoo.com (replace -at- with @) or call him at 917-446-6686.

Chris Owens is one of the best candidates around. Not only a good progressive, but a great person as well. If you believe as we do that Brooklyn’s neighborhoods should be preserved and not turned into playthings for greedy developers, then you need to support Chris Owens in his bid to become the next Congressman for Brooklyn’s 11th District. Chris Owens is on our side, and he always has been. He has been an advocate for many progressive causes, and most recently has stood firmly and courageously, along with Norman Siegel, against Bruce Ratner’s ill-conceived Atlantic Yards development scheme. He is the ONLY candidate in this race who has stood by the community rather than the developer. (By the way, in case you don't recognize the guy standing between Chris and his dad, it's the legendary Pete Seeger.) Chris is running for the seat now held by his father, Congressman Major Owens, who is retiring after 24 years of service. It is in our interest that this seat remains in the hands of a true progressive Democrat and that it not be taken by an overly ambitious politician who will compromise our future. Chris is fighting to defend our neighborhoods and our homes, and now it's our chance to help him as he runs for Congress. Please join us at the historic Freddy's Backroom (and yes, they have air conditioning), in the endangered heart of Central Brooklyn, for a Sunday afternoon of live music and fun. Music will be provided by Dave Benjoya & Friends, with a special guest performance by Chris himself. The suggested minimum donation is only $10.

Have you recently read about fair trade in DFNYC's recent newsletters? Have you been both inspired and yet confused at the same time?

Never fear! The NYC Fair Trade Coalition and Democracy for NYC invite you to "Fair Trade 101", where you can learn the basics of fair trade: What it is, why it helps farmers, and how to make NYC a Fair Trade city

Join us Wednesday, August 17th from 7-9pm, at the office of American Jewish World Service, 45 West 36th Street (between 5th & 6th), 10th Floor

Iced Fair Trade beverages will be served!

Please RSVP or direct questions to: fair.trade.nyc -at- gmail.com (replace -at- with @)

More background info:

Small-scale farmers around the world - from the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, and Ecuador to Ethiopia, India, and Vietnam - typically receive very low prices for the coffee, tea, cocoa, bananas, and other crops they produce. But those who sell on the Fair Trade market in these and other developing countries make much more income to feed their families, send their kids to school, and pay for housing and health care.

The NYC Fair Trade Coalition is working to raise public awareness and increase availability of Fair Trade products throughout our city. This summer, the New York City Council unanimously passed a resolution that acknowledges Fair Trade as a key solution for millions of struggling farmers around the world and encourages the purchase of Fair Trade Certified products by City Government institutions. The resolution was an important victory for the rapidly growing Fair Trade movement in New York City.

By now, you've heard of Cindy Sheehan, mother of Army Specialist Casey Sheehan who was killed in Iraq, and her vigil outside President Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas. What you may not know is that Cindy is a regular DFA Meetup participant in Sacramento and regular correspondent with DFNYC.

President Bush has refused to meet with Cindy. On Saturday, he said that there are lots of people who have "something to say to the president" and "it's also important for me to go on with my life."

Democracy for America is teaming up with MoveOn and True Majority to organize nationwide "Vigils for Cindy Sheehan." Click below to join one in your community:
