Have you recently read about fair trade in DFNYC's recent newsletters? Have you been both inspired and yet confused at the same time?
Never fear! The NYC Fair Trade Coalition and Democracy for NYC invite you to "Fair Trade 101", where you can learn the basics of fair trade: What it is, why it helps farmers, and how to make NYC a Fair Trade city
Join us Wednesday, August 17th from 7-9pm, at the office of American Jewish World Service, 45 West 36th Street (between 5th & 6th), 10th Floor
Iced Fair Trade beverages will be served!
Please RSVP or direct questions to: fair.trade.nyc -at- gmail.com (replace -at- with @)
More background info:
Small-scale farmers around the world - from the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, and Ecuador to Ethiopia, India, and Vietnam - typically receive very low prices for the coffee, tea, cocoa, bananas, and other crops they produce. But those who sell on the Fair Trade market in these and other developing countries make much more income to feed their families, send their kids to school, and pay for housing and health care.
The NYC Fair Trade Coalition is working to raise public awareness and increase availability of Fair Trade products throughout our city. This summer, the New York City Council unanimously passed a resolution that acknowledges Fair Trade as a key solution for millions of struggling farmers around the world and encourages the purchase of Fair Trade Certified products by City Government institutions. The resolution was an important victory for the rapidly growing Fair Trade movement in New York City.

By now, you've heard of Cindy Sheehan, mother of Army Specialist Casey Sheehan who was killed in Iraq, and her vigil outside President Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas. What you may not know is that Cindy is a regular DFA Meetup participant in Sacramento and regular correspondent with DFNYC.
President Bush has refused to meet with Cindy. On Saturday, he said that there are lots of people who have "something to say to the president" and "it's also important for me to go on with my life."
Democracy for America is teaming up with MoveOn and True Majority to organize nationwide "Vigils for Cindy Sheehan." Click below to join one in your community:
