[Ed : Bumped by Liza ] Democracy For New York City is hosting a special training headed by Teresa Hommel, computer expert and voting activist. It will fill in the gaps on what you know about Paper Ballot/Optical Scan vs DRE voting systems and =will also give you some lobbying smarts, so we can take this issue to the NY City Council members and make sure all five boroughs opt for Paper BBallot/Optical Scanner systems. Since NYC makes up about 38% of NY State voters, it’s a good way for securing the vote and influencing machine voting choice statewide. Bring: your Council Member's name. You can find out who yours is by going to www.nypirg.org. If you are interested in this critical issue, please contact: Stephanie Low (212 534 4103) stephlow@mindspring.com to reserve a space. 6-9 pm. Community Church of New York, 28 East 35 St. (between Park and Madison). Ring the bell for the Front Lounge. $10 a person, to cover costs. | ||

I publicized the Manhattan Critical Mass event earlier. Critical Mass is a monthly celebration of bicycles and other nonpolluting means of transportation, exercising our right to the road. Critical Mass is a movement, not an organization; no two riders participate for exactly the same reason. New York City's first Critical Mass was in 1993. Critical Mass has also become an expression of Free Speech and Freedom of Assembly. Since they rode in protest of the Republican Convention, Mayor Bloomberg has been taking revenge on the Manhattan events by arresting participants. But you can still stand up for our rights without getting arrested. There are also Brooklyn Critical Mass bike rides that as far as I know are not being targeted by Bloomberg. Start: 18:00
Meet at the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge -- SW corner of Chambers and Centre St/Park Row at 7 or wait for us at the Carroll St Drawbridge in Brooklyn, between Nevins and Bond, at 7:25 or we'll see you at OR by 7:50 p.m. we'll be at the 69th St Pier in Brooklyn at the Shore Parkway bike path entrance (take 68th Street past Owl's Head Park and bear right). The Cyclone Ride goes to Coney Island Amusement Park (Brooklyn). Bring locks as we plan to lock up and ride the rides. Bring money for food and amusements, and a swimsuit if you plan to hit the waves. We usually spend about an hour and a half in the park, on the beach (and in the water!), on the boardwalk, and at Nathan's. Some people return on the subway, and others ride. Start: Citizen Action Nation Call In Day to Reducing or repealing the estate tax will give more tax breaks for the wealthy while having devastating consequences for lower and middle-income taxpayers. Only the richest 2 percent of our nation's families currently pay any estate tax at all. These are people with estates larger than $1.5 million for an individual or $3 million for a couple. Proposals in Congress to weaken or repeal of the estate tax will cost nearly $1 trillion over the next ten years. This comes at a time that Congress has proposed spending cuts from important public programs such as Medicaid, food stamps, and education programs. A couple of weeks back Karl Rove enraged me by exploiting the 9/11 tragedy in an attempt to raise money for a New Jersey Republican, Doug Forrester. Dem candidate Corzine is ahead in the polls, so Rove figured it was time to pull out the 9/11 card. This disgusting exploitation of those who died on 9/11 has got to stop. Karl Rove refused to apologize and then it got forgotten in the whole issue of Karl Rove's treasonous actions outing Plame. Well, now Dick Cheney is coming to campaign for Forrester. I am hoping that some of us New Yorkers can make it to protest Cheney and Forrester. Here's the scoop from the NJ Dems: WE NEED YOU TO HELP US SHOW DOUG FORRESTER THAT VICE PRESIDENT DICK CHENEY AND THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION POLICIES ARE NOT WELCOME IN NJ!!!
