Just as dispiriting, party regulars chose as the convicted Norman's successor Assemblyman Vito Lopez, an old-time ward heeler from Bushwick who has never shown a zeal for reform until, gee whiz, now. He vows the party will consult a panel of learned men and women, such as Brooklyn Law School's dean, about picking quality judges.
We've seen this movie before, and the ending stinks. Two years ago, Norman and party district leaders, Lopez included, pledged they would never support a candidate for a judgeship who had not been approved by an independent screening commission. This year, for the first time, the panel reviewed Civil Court candidates.
And guess what? The party shoehorned two lawyers onto the bench without any screening. Kenny Sherman, son of district leader Roberta Sherman, will get a 10-year Civil Court term without so much as a primary. And Canarsie Assemblyman Frank Seddio was awarded an uncontested ballot line for Surrogate's Court. So much for quality control. So much for keeping your word.
Powell
I have kept well away from NY-10 other than to praise Towns for his support of impeachment. In a district where Charles Barron looked tempting last time around, I have tended to keep away. If you want to discuss Powell, please do so. But don't blame us for avoiding a district we have little real enthusiasm for while we are juggling dozens of districts around the country (between this site and Culture Kitchen).
As to Powell's past, he is quite open about it and claims he has ongoing counselling and has overcome his past. If I may speak more generally for a moment, I have known many people who come from abusive families and situations and the tendency to perpetuate that behavior is almost overwhelming. It is rare for someone to have the fortitude to admit the problem, seek help and have it stick. It is comparable to a drug or alcohol addiction. So if, and I do say IF, Powell has overcome his problems, more power to him. That said, let me again point out that the only comments I have made regarding the NY-10 district over the past year was to praise Towns for his impeachment stand. Hard to say how you see that as somehow giving Powell a pass. I never sought to involve myself in that district. Had I unlimited time maybe I would comment, but I have limited time and many districts to handle. When you are juggling as many districts as Bouldin or I do, we will perhaps pay more attention to your criticisms.
