Stella D'Oro

Rally in Solidarity with the Workers of Stella D'oro Bakery in the Bronx

This comes from Democracy for NYC:

Keep Stella D'oro in the Bronx!
Rally & March, Tomorrow, Friday, September 25

What: Protest & March with Stella D'oro Workers and Supporters
When: Friday, September 25th, 5:00 p.m rally
Where: Protest at Goldman Sachs, 85 Broad Street (4 or 5 train to Bowling Green)
March, immediately following, to City Hall (rally 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.)

Two months after returning to their jobs after an 11-month strike against deep concession demands, the courageous workers at the Bronx-based Stella D'oro Biscuit Co. are still fighting.

A stunning decision by the National Labor Relations Board, which found that Stella D'oro had bargained in bad faith, returned the strikers to work, with back pay and no concessions, in early July. The strikers had offered to return to their jobs under the terms of their old contract in May, but management, intent on breaking the union, had refused.

On Wednesday, September 23, the company's union-busting owner, the private equity firm Brynwood Partners, said it had reached a deal to sell Stella D'oro, and that production will be relocated to Ohio by early October.  read more »

Stella d' Oro Strike Ends, but Fight Continues

Awhile back I wrote about the Stella d'Oro strike (after I learned about it from Democracy for NYC) where nearly 140 workers spend 11 months on strike after a hedge fund took over the factory and tried to force 26% pay cuts on the workers. You can read some background to the strike in this earlier article. The strike has now ended after the National Labor Relations Board ruled in favor of the workers when the parent company, Brynwood Partners, refused to disclose financial information supporting their claim that the Stella d'Oro factory was not making a profit. That's the good news for union supporters.

Stella D'oro Workers Ask for Boycott

Democracy for NYC and the NY State Teachers' Union are calling on people to support striking Stella D'oro workers by boycotting Stella d'Oro products. I have from time to time bought and enjoyed Stella D'oro products...but I will honor this boycott. From a DFNYC email:

Stella D'oro Workers Ask for Boycott

Since August 11, 140 workers at the Stella D'oro Bakery in the Bronx have been on strike. The company replaced them with non-union labor, so the original union workers have filed an Unfair Labor Practice complaint at the Labor Relations Board and been upheld in a preliminary ruling. The NY State Teachers' Union has joined them on the picket line and contributed to their stike fund. They are gathering support from other unions as well

Action: The workers are asking supporters to boycott Stella D'oro products AND to ask stores in their communities to stop carrying those products.
