Progressive Fail in NYC

Yesterday's election in NYC was won on the one hand by right wing extremist teabaggers, and on the other hand by corrupt Party Boss Vito Lopez.

Moderate, competent Democrat David Weprin was trounced by radical right wing extremist Turner for Anthony Weiner's Congressional seat. The media wants to spin this as a referendum on Obama and Israel. It wasn't. This is just another right wing myth used for spin purposes. The election came down to one thing primarily, I believe. Marriage Equality. David Weprin, himself a very pro-Israel, mainstream Orthodox Jew had the integrity to recognize that his personal religious views on gay marriage should not trump Constitutional rights in this secular society, so he voted for marriage equality and openly supported it. To me this shows integrity and intelligence because he, unlike so many right wing religious extremists like Rick "Christian Taliban" Perry, recognizes that his personal religious beliefs cannot by law, nor should not be forced upon society at large. They remain, for him personal.  read more »

Sept. 13th, 2011 Central Brooklyn Eating Liberally: Cafe Steinhof 7 PM

This month we can tell Hurricane Irene stories, discuss Libya and think about what comes next for local politics.

I should note that the primary and special elections are at the same time. If there is anyone who wants to skip the meeting to campaign for Cheryl Gonzales or David Weprin, contact Lambda Independent Democrats and tell them you want to help where Cheryl Gonzales and David Weprin's districts overlap (which is basically the Brooklyn part of Weprin's district). That is the most critical place for campaigning.

To volunteer email: LIDBrook...@gmail.com

or call: 917.499.8198 or 917.696.1781

For those who are attending Eating Liberally, please join us at Cafe Steinhof in the South Slope. 422 7th Ave (at 14th St) for some great Austrian food. Check out their menu here: http://www.cafesteinhof.com/html/dinner.html

Read my review of the restaurant here.

But I do urge people to spend some time that day helping out Lambda Independent Democrats or New Kings Democrats elect Cheryl Gonzales and David Weprin.  read more »

Take a Stand Against Teabaggers in NYC

"I don't understand why NYC Democrats aren't willing to fight a Tea Party candidate in their back yard."

That is what a friend said to me recently, referring to this year's Sept. 13th special and primary elections. Few are paying attention, and yet we are at risk of losing Anthony Weiner's former seat to a Teabagger extremist, we are at risk of losing an Assembly seat to an anti-gay, anti-choice right winger, and we are at risk of letting a civil court seat go to a corrupt crony of the Vito Lopez machine.

Three critical races that are being largely ignored.

We have to win as many of these as we can. They are particularly critical for LGBT rights.

PLEASE SUPPORT:

DAVID WEPRIN FOR CONGRESS
CHERYL GONZALES FOR KINGS COUNTY CIVIL COURT JUDGE
JESUS GONZALEZ FOR ASSEMBLY

Central Brooklyn Eating Liberally: Tuesday, January 11th at 7 PM at Java Indonesian

This month's Central Brooklyn Eating Liberally meeting will be
Tuesday, January 11, 7 PM at Java Indonesian restaurant in the South
Slope (trying out a different neighborhood this month).

We are getting people from both Prospect Heights and the South Slope
attending, so I figure maybe I will try alternating neighborhoods to
see what people like better. Java is a place that has been in Park
Slope for many years but Joy and I only finally tried it recently. We
liked it and I think it would be good to add to our list.

455 7th Ave
(between 15th St & 16th St)
Brooklyn, NY 11215

Come join us for some good food and some intense political discussion.
There are always local political scandals to discuss as well as
general discussions about how progressives can fight back against the
resurgent Bush Republicans.
