Toxic Waste Drives Wal-Mart From Staten Island: Wal-Mart eyes Brooklyn once more
Well, the good news is that Staten Island is no longer faced with the possibility of Wal-Mart coming in and driving out local small businesses. The bad news is why Wal-Mart gave up and also that Wal-Mart is once again looking to Brooklyn.
In the past I wrote about strong, bipartisan opposition to Wal-Mart in Staten Island. Both Republican and Democratic politicians object to Wal-Mart's breaking laws, driving out small businesses, and general business practices that are anti-consumer, anti-community and anti-labor. But this rare bipartisan opposition may not have been the deciding factor.
According to the Sept. 6th Brooklyn Papers, Wal-Mart abandoned Staten Island because of the high cost of cleaning up toxic chemicals on the site it had been considering. Apparantly, Staten Island is just too polluted for Wal-Mart.
Staten Island's loss could be Brooklyn's gain...unfortunately. Strong opposition in both Queens and Brooklyn has so far prevented Wal-Mart from getting approval for opening in either of these boroughs. But now Wal-Mart is again courting Brooklyn, joining the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce with a $1000 check. One hopes that Brooklyn's price is more than $1000! But the Chamber of Commerce does seem open to the idea, saying more "big-box retailers" should open up in Brooklyn. This is a bad sign for Brooklyn's small businesses and labor unions since many of these big-box stores (with the exception of Costco, which already has a store in Brooklyn) are anti-union and drive out small businesses.
Let's hope that their differences over Atlantic Yards won't drive a wedge between community and labor groups, the coalition that stopped Wal-Mart before. Sadly, Ratner has been doing a good job of turning unions against community groups and progressives, possibly endangering the anti-Wal-Mart coalition.

If Wal-Mart comes to
If Wal-Mart comes to Brooklyn I think I may shoot myself. Wal-Mart is the most disgusting store in America and would be worse for Brooklyn then Atlantic Yards. Yup, that's right worse then Atlantic Yards. I hate A.Y. but anything that people in the middle of the country think is great proves to me that it is not something we need in Brooklyn. I have been to my share of Wal-Marts and all they do is destroy local economies by flooding the market with cheap tacky crap. If you live in Brooklyn and want a Wal-Mart in Brooklyn do yourself a favor and move to Arkansas you will feel much more at home their.
Some disagreement
Wal-Mart has the same stiffling effect on the local economy in Arkansas or Brooklyn. There are also better ways of doing what they claim to do. Costco and Trader Joe's, for example, bring cheaper products in one big store without many of the problems Wal-Mart causes.
And Atlantic Yards will bring in several big stores that crush local businesses. So AY is probably worse.
WAL MART IN BROOKLYN
We had started to look into this and what we can do to prevent WalMart from opening in Brooklyn earlier this year. Unfortunately we have all gotten involved in elections and this has been put on the back burner.
We need to start this up again and become vocal. Hopefully it can wait until after the November elections because I know that most of us have more on our plate to worry about but this is a priority for all of us to prevent WalMart from coming into Brooklyn.
Has there been any
policy statement on this from Marty Markowitz?
Ah, if you become a success
Ah, if you become a success you get punished. But I mean this makes sense. New York City is only for small businesses, like Toy's R Us, Ikea, Staples, Virgin, Gap, Best Buy, Blockbuster, and many more little businesses. Hypocrisy, that's America for ya :-/
Ah, the hypocricy of you
First off, if you don't think NYC is big on small businesses you haven't walked down any street in NYC.
Also, you clearly haven't kept up on the illgal activities of Wal-mart, their anti-labor stands, their poor treatment of their workers, their sweat shop made products or their intentional tactics for driving out small businesses. Right wing and left wing have started getting together on this one because Wal-Mart is so bad. Costco is an excellent atlernative that doesn't have such bad practices and has been even more successful.
And since when has community solidarity been something to object to?
