Equivocation by Councilman David Yassky Regarding Term Limits

Email from Councilman David Yassky regarding term limits:

Thank you for contacting my office about Mayor Bloomberg’s proposal to revise the City’s term limits law. As you know, current law limits City officials to two terms in office. Be assured that I take this issue very seriously, and will not come to a decision lightly.

While I believe that it is better for the city to have twelve year term limits instead of eight, the current limits were twice approved by the voters of this city through a clear and direct ballot process. For this reason, it would have been my strong preference that this issue not be put before the City Council, but rather the voters. However, as Mayor Bloomberg has put the issue before the Council, it is incumbent upon me to weigh the benefits of a twelve year limit against the desire to have the decision remain in the hands of the voters.

For that reason, your input is extremely valuable to me as I anticipate casting a vote.

Please encourage others you know to share their opinions with my office on this important issue, and know that I will take your input seriously as I make a decision about what is appropriate.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact my office about any other issues of concern to you or others in our district. Thank you for your input and support.

Well, like the man asks, give him your opinion. And remember, he is aiming for citywide office, so perhaps he would like to know the views of a wider audience than just his current constituents. Here is Yassky's contact info:

I Got The Same Letter

But look at this one that I received from City Councileman Thomas White Jr. Not only is it a form letter, it's addressed like those letters you get asking you to move your credit card to their bank and the best is that it says absolutely NOTHING.

To Whom It May Concern:

Thank you for voicing your concerns regarding the issue of term limits. If you feel strongly about this issue, I urge you to come to City Hall to the hearings that will be taken place regarding term limits on Thursday and Friday. The hearing on Thursday will take place at 1pm at City Hall in the Council Chambers. The hearing on Friday will take place 10am at City Hall in the Committe room. For more information about the hearings you can look at out website, http://council.nyc.gov/html/home/home.shtml. Please feel free to call my office, for any other concerns you may have at 212-788-6850. Thank you.

Councilmember Thomas White Jr.
