Behind the Smile: Markowitz turns petty, hypocritical and vindictive

Last year, Marty Markowitz broke party ranks and endorsed Republican Michael Bloomberg. In response, many of us progressive activists in Brooklyn broke ranks with Marty and supported Gloria Mattera, the Green candidate.

For me it was a very hard choice to support a Green since I have a fairly dim view of the Greens in general, though am respectful to specific Greens. In the end, I felt Marty Markowitz, who I used to like a great deal, had become a mere opportunist and had lost my support. I went Green and many others, Dean-supporters, Kerry-supporters etc., did as well. Chris Owens was one of them.

On election night I met Marty Markowitz and showed him my Ferrer and Mattera sign. I told him I used to be a big fan but he lost me with the Bloomberg endorsement. He shrugged and indicated he didn't care.

I guess he did care. Because the man known for his smile is proving to be hypocritical, vindictive and petty.

The NY Carib NEws reports that Markowitz holds a grudge against Chris Owens for his endorsement of Mattera. Mr. Smiley said of Chris Owens:

"This guy is an opportunist. That's all he is. I don't wish anyone ill, except for him to be defeated which is what he wished me in my campaign (for Borough President). He endorsed the candidate outside of the Democratic Party against me, which is his right to do. He sucks up to the affluent minority. That's who he does the dance for. That's his thing, the affluent minority. He is turning his face on the majority" in the 11th Congressional District and in Brooklyn as a whole.

Ummmm...Marty Markowitz calling someone else an opportunist??? He is criticizing someone else for endorsing outside of the Democratic Party??? And in what way does Chris suck up to the affluent minority? Chris, at least as much as Marty, has a good connection with regular voters of all groups. If anything, Marty sucks up to the affluent far far FAR more than Chris ever does. What a giant hypocrite! Behind that smile is a very petty man. Marty, you took opportunism to an art form and you were the first to break not only party, but ideological ranks when you endorsed Bloomberg...the REPUBLICAN. Chris (and myself) may have broken party ranks but at least stayed true to our ideals as progressives. How can Marty DARE to criticize for breaking party ranks? Before he does that he needs to apologize to Freddie Ferrer and the Democratic Party for breaking ranks himself. Otherwise, Marty, you have NO RIGHT to criticize.

Chris Owens' response was far more gentlemanly than Mr. Smiley's petty rant:

Reacting to Markowitz' strong assessment, Owens said in statement that he "disappointed that Marty takes criticism of his work so personally. It's unprofessional and petty. I have been supportive of Marty in the past. While we disagree strongly on the Atlantic Yards project, I only considered Marty a 'traitor to the Democratic Party when he endorsed Mayor (Michael Bloomberg) for re-election, rather than endorsing Democratic Mayoral nominee Fernando Ferrer or staying neutral."

When I first moved to Brooklyn, I really liked Marty. I didn't necessarily think he would be good in any other office, but he definitely seemed like an ideal BP for Brooklyn. Either I woke up or he changed. In the crowd I run with, no one would have endorsed Mattera had Marty stayed loyal to his party. He chose, as is his right, to endorse the Republican. We chose, as is our right, to endorse the Green. Marty is asking us to respect his choice but is not willing to respect our choice. THAT is disgusting to me.

Behind the smile, Marty Markowitz proves to be petty, vindictive and hypocritical. As Michael Bouldin would say, Feh!

Markowitz is insecure. He's the neediest man in the world. He wants to be loved, and would rather talk with an ideological adversary who hugs him than a compatriot who offers constructive criticism.

Markowitz is popular

Markowitz has the fairly unique skill of being extremely popular without really doing much to deserve it. Imagine what he could DO using that popularity if he actually had some vision to go along with his skill for being popular. I used to love the guy! Why? I don't know! Maybe because I saw him everywhere and he would talk to everyone as an equal.

But now he is NOT talking to people as equals. He somehow wants to be dictator of Brooklyn and although the mayor has abnormally strong control over the city, no one would ever argue that BP was a position of much power. So what does he think he is doing freaking out over opposition. No one can take his actual words seriously given the hypocricy of them. They are childish lashing out against people like Chris and me (and I guess you) who have the audacity to stand up to him.

It's a shame! If only he had some real guts and vision he could actually DO something. As it is he may be turning bitter at his own inadequacy. Which I guess is the same thing as saying he's insecure. So, once again, we strangely agree.

Not that strange, really. We're coming from different worldviews, based upon different experiences, but my guess is that, at base, we are both liberal Jews (religiously and politically) from the burbs who came to the City to be bohos and have now evolved into some mutuations of the same based upon those factors reacting to the reality of our experiences (and the generational thing). We probably agree more often than not, but those discussions would be pretty boring to read, so just drop dead (only kidding).

mole333's picture

Depends what you mean by 'burbs

Careful...you'll give your identity away at this rate : -)

Liberal Jew (though not sure how religious I can claim to be...) certainly. But only from the 'burbs if Los Angeles counts as a suburb of NYC. Lived in California (Los Angeles, then San Diego, then Los Angeles again) right through to my Ph.D. (not counting 2 months in Finland and 3 months in Western Samoa). After that lived in Japan, then Manhattan. Came to Manhattan because had a job offer, but didn't expect to stay. Then met a woman whose a native NYer and wound up staying. Came to Brooklyn because we could afford it, but decided I liked it MUCH better than Manhattan.

Thing about liberals (and Jews!) is they will argue like hell over the 5% they disagree on and ignore the 95% they agree on.

Don't wanna discount regional

Don't wanna discount regional difference, but burbs are burbs, and liberal Jews from the burbs who think they are now bohos are a dime a dozen in Brownstone Bklyn, so ID is not really an issue

Analyzing Marty

Hey guys, take the lovefest offline already (kidding! kidding!).

Insecure is right. Marty wants everyone to love him, so what better way to earn that love than by bringing the Dodgers back to Brooklyn. Oh, wait, the Dodgers aren't interested? OK, how about the Nets?

Unfortunately, the Nets turned out to be cover for Bruce Ratner's massive real estate boondoggle, and now that Marty is on the receiving end of the anger of Brooklynites for his shameless shilling for an overwhemingly inappropriate project, all he can do is lash out, since he's incapable of biting his tongue. How sad.

Of course, he may not truly be incapable of silence, since despite his earlier grandstanding about the Atlantic Yards plan being "too big," he has remained mum about his views on appropriate scale.

Ah, well, just 1,292 days before Brooklyn is Marty-free.

Markowitz

Marty Markowitz seems to all but openly be supporting David Yassky. He had a big table *right next* to Yassky's at the seventh ave. street fair and it was clear the people at the two tables were "co-habitating" on purpose. But that is not surprising since Marty's not going to support any candidates who are against the Ratner project.

I don't know how much his endorsement is worth anyhow, it didnt help gifford miller much did it? Gifford's people littered Park Slope with giant lifesize cardboard cutouts of him and Marty on primary day, and it didnt help him one bit.

That said, I can understand Markowitz being concerned about party unity. If he asked the other candidates point blank if they'll join forces behind Yassky if he gets the democratic nomination, I'm not sure he'd like the answer...

Party Loyalty

I think Marty's forfieted the right ever to show outrage concerning the subject of party loyalty, as if he's ever lost two minutes of sleep worrying about that topic in the first place. Perhaps instead he should have taken Owens to task for supporting 16 different amendments to the US Constitution, except Marty himself has built his career on empty nad meaningless gestures (perhaps he got too used to being a State Senate Democrat). The only loyalty that counts for Markowitz is personal loyalty, and since Yassky was the only one of these guys to back him first time out, perhaps that's the answer, because Clarke is clearly a stronger and more unequivocal Yards supporter.

Markowitz has been hospitalized

I am taking a moratorium from Marty bashing until he gets out of the hospital; suggest you all do the same (don't know what his illness is, but suspect it comes from Lucy Koteen sticking pins into a statue of the "pop'n fresh" doughboy while lactating over scented candles).

mole333's picture

Agreed

Don't want to bash someone when they're down.

By the way. Lactation is no laughing matter. Had a relative who was lactation consultant to everyone from Nicaraguan peasants to rock and roll stars. And have seen what it takes to breast feed a little larval human. Just be glad we don't have to go through it! My sympathies go to anyone who goes through it and to anyone who helps women go through it. The difference breast milk makes to a baby is enormous (and I know people who have done the developmental biology research) and it is a royal pain in the...well, I guess not in the ass, to do.

Progressive Districts

The Rev. Al Sharpton, who ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004, says he won't get into the race this time. "I am not going to run"

Wow, huge surprise....Edwards-Obama 2008 with or without Rev. Al's support.
