If background and accomplishment meant anything, Jack Lester should have won, but he ran a sloppy, undefinanced campaign, assuming his good housing works spoke volumes for him. They did, but good works tend to whisper until you amp them up. Meanwhile Dan Garodnick proved to be a terrific and attractive campaigner with a sizable warchest, early endorsements and a slick, credible above-board operation. To a lot of voters, the choices in candidates seemed win-win. And some people even said they voted for Garodnick because they didn't want to lose Lester as the Stuy Town tenants lawyer. So much for promotional opportunities for doing a good job.
