Margarita López Torres Picks Up Some Big League Endorsements

Margarita López Torres picked up some rather big league endorsements this morning down at City Hall.

From the press relase:

At 9:30AM Monday morning, July 18, on the steps of
New York City Hall, three
congressional members from Brooklyn, along with
other elected officials and
supporters, will announce their support for Civil
Court Judge Margarita López
Torres to be the next Surrogate Court Judge of
Brooklyn.

Those three congresscritters? Nydia Velazquez (NY-12), Ed Towns (NY-10) and Major Owens (NY-11).

Again, from the PR:

Judge López Torres is running in the primary for
the Democratic Party’s
nomination to take the place of Michael Feinberg,
who was recently removed from
office by the Commission of Judicial Conduct and the
New York Court of
Appeals. Feinberg was removed for allowing his
close personal friend, who he
appointed as the counsel to the public
administrator, to overcharge estates
millions of dollars in legal fees, funds that would
have gone to the widows and
orphans of those who died without wills. The Court
said that Feinberg's actions
"debased his office and eroded public confidence in
the integrity of the
judiciary."

Already this year the Daily News called Judge López Torres
“a kind of Joan
of Arc of reform in the borough.

So like

Pardon for my ignorance, but I am curious, what qualifications does Margarita López --from now on MLo-- has to be a judge?

Torres

I believe Margharita is getting some help from Norm Siegel as well. Norm doesn't endorse, but he has been quietly backing some candidates like Paul Wooten (he introduced and heavily praised Paul at a fundraiser I went to) and I believe he has done the same for Torres, though I am not positive.

MLo rules, the bio lipris linked to is a good start

look the corruption in the brooklyn courts is out of controle. she is one of the only independent judicial candidates (ie not clarence norman machine) to ever beat the machine at anything.

THe village voice wrote a beautiful peice about her the first time she ran. It was the first article that made me aware of the democratic machine and the corruption and crime it perpetuates.

She had always received super high marks but she didn't get endorsed by the machine because she didn't hire on of their daughters for a job. Its that simple.

She has been a huge advocate for a great number of urban progressive causes especially lead paint.

She is the real deal. I am super relieved she is running again.

Progressive Districts

Only in New York

The face of the Republican Party in Iowa is the face of a losing party, full of hatred toward immigrants, lust for government subsidies, and the demand that any Republican seeking the office of the presidency acknowledge that he's little more than Jesus Christ's running mate.
