A Schmuck in the Ladies' Room

“The Democratic party will indeed suffer the consequences of its actions. Republican women who crossed over for Hillary will go back to their own party, while others will either stay home or write in their votes for Hillary. Still others will leave the party that has no respect for the women who constitute two thirds of it's (sic) base.

In recent times, the Republicans have stood for their beliefs. Although many of us progressives fight vehemently against their platform, at least we know who the enemy is. This time the Democrats have shown their true colors and it's high time for a party that respects the needs and rights of over half the population. Maybe Senator Clinton should start a National Women's Party. She certainly has the base she would need to make it happen. At least that party will state its mission clearly through it's title. The Democrats certainly did not live up to their name.”

NOW-NYS’ President Marcia Pappas, posting on “Woman’s Outlook NOW”- June 7, 2008

The home page on the website of NOW-NYS opens with this quote: “The Radical Right is holding women hostage. Now there is something you can do about it”

Apparently, the “something you can do” about the Radical Right is to aid and abet them.

It won't be the first time.

One of the banes of Democratic politics in the recent past has been single-issue groups' refusal to look beyond their own turf and see the larger picture. It has often been more important to them to support the candidate that comes closest to passing a "purity test" than to consider which one would best protect and advance all progressive values. That's why groups like NOW endorse nice-guy, pro-choice Republican Lincoln Chafee while Democratic control of the Senate, and Supreme Court appointments, hang in the balance. It's a good thing that enough progressive women don't listen to them.

In this case it's a rather large piece of turf they're guarding, but how many Republican women crossed over to cast a symbolic vote for pro-choice, right-wing demon Hillary Clinton? Apart from those who decided to listen to Rush Limbaugh and make mischief in Texas, that is?

Once the temperature has gone down a bit, even the most ardent womens'-issues voters will realize that McCain is very bad news for them, while Obama's positions are virtually identical to Clinton's. And that's even before they know about what McCain called his wife in public, or the joke he told about Chelsea.

"It has often been more important to them to support the candidate that comes closest to passing a 'purity test' than to consider which one would best protect and advance all progressive values."

Well Sid, that is their right (at least during primary season)--after all, they are single issue groups for a a reason. If they don't elevate their single issue, WTF will?

The problem with NOW (or rather the "problem with NOW" in this particular instance--to talk about "the" problem with NOW in the singular is an example of lunatic specificity) is that as much as any sane candiate can be said to pass their "purity test", Obama passes it. They have a perfect right to follow their single issue soul, and even a right to conclude that their single issue purposes were best served by Hillary rather than Obama.

What they don't have the right to do, is to sell the idea that the best way to achieve their single issue goals is to boycott the general election or advocate some sort of lemmings to the sea symbolic damning of both houses.

Since this is what Marcia Pappas is doing, she must be condemned as a Trojan Whore for the Republicans. The fact that she doesn't even realize the depth of her unspeakable crimes against common sne is only one more reason why she must be exposed for the lunatic that she is. Her sincerity is her greatest crime of all.
