Three Thoughts For Father's Day Weekend

Location

Folk Music Weekend with Pete Seeger and many others. This weekend coming, June 16th & 17th , I plan to bike to the Clearwater Hudson River Revival Festival at Croton Point Park, Croton-on-Hudson. John Hall, now Congress Member, sang last year while trolling for volunteers and supporters. Featured performers include: Cowboy Junkies, Buffy Sainte-Marie. Bruce Cockburn, Leo Kottke, Paul Winter, Bruce Molsky Band w/ Tony Trischka. You can also (for more money) sail on the sloop Clearwater or (for no money at all) swim in the Hudson. There's dancing & schmoozing, too. Metro-North brings people to free shuttle buses from the station. I’ll be at the volunteer tent in the morning. Come say “hi!”

Hate Folkies? Try Ulysses If folk music is not appealing, go to Symphony Space (95th & Broadway) Saturday where Bloomsday will be in full swing. (June 16 is the 24 hour period of the journey Leopold Bloom & Stephen Dedalus across Dublin, the occasion of the novel, if not the precisely subject). If you love Ulysses or have never been able to read it, this may be a great way to spend the day. The full monte, 12-hour program is $25, while 3-hours is $20. Ulysses is a book I lose my way in. Jumping into a Ulysses pool like this really helps me get it.

Noon-5 pm Bloomspeople: A sampling of the denizens of dear dirty Dublin. A dizzying grand tour of all eighteen episodes of Ulysses. 5-6 pm: Letters of James and Nora Joyce and their circle. 6-7 pm Finnegans Wake: Actor Adam Harvey performs selections from Joyce’s nighttime novel. 7-8 pm The Antient Concert: The American premiere of a new opera, with libretto by Paul Muldoon and music by Daron Hagen. 8-9 pm Il Ritorno d’Ulisse: Leopold Bloom comes home to Molly in the “Ithaca” episode of Ulysses. 9 pm-midnight The incomparable Fionnula Flanagan reads the complete uncensored words of Molly Bloom’s nighttime thoughts.

Also Hate James Joyce? If you have young children in tow who'd be bored silly by the stong sexuality of Molly Bloom, try Children's Day at the South Street Seaport -- (12-5PM) with a Brooklyn Philharmonic Concert (8PM) ending with fireworks at 9:30 PM. All Free.
