SiCKO Opens Friday; Michael Moore Pickets Today
SiCKO, the Michael Moore documentary on health care and health insurance opens Friday to a chorus of articles, publicity, and policy debates. Shamelessly building Harvy Weinstein's movie promotion, I called the offices of four fairly progressive New York Congress Members: Joe Crowely, John Hall, Nita Lowey and Nydia Velazquez. None of them are co-sponsors of HR 676 -- the bill introduced by Rep. John Conyers. (For a description of the bill click here, for a list of current co-sponsors click here "Why doesn't the Congress Member support HR 676?" I've received answers which I plan to post tomorrow. In the meanwhile, check out these SiCKO assessments from The Nation and from Truthdig. Then, go see SiCKO and call your Congress Member in the morning. Or, more immediately, click here to sign onto the AFL-CIO campaign to improve health care.
Last night, at Judson Memorial Church, I went to a party thrown by Progressive Source Communications , a media consulting company whose principal, Jonathan Greenberg, is also a principal leader of those Greenwich Village residents who oppose the rebuilding/destruction of Washington Square Park. Mayor Bloomberg seems committed to a plan to, as I see it, turn the park over to NYU following a capital reconstruction which will eliminate the circle in the square. (Can you tell I hate this plan?). The party was about health care, however (Did you think I was changing the subject?) Greenberg has put together a powerful ad for Physicians For A National Health Plan It's a great ad. I don't know the marketing plan for you, but plan to post the url tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the day books tell us that Michael Moore and California Nurses will picket in Wall Street Thursday afternoon, protesting the corporatization of health care(?) . It sounds like fun, but I cannot get there. Can you?

HR 676 is, in my opinion, a great bill but
politically, as of this typing, it has not caught fire. As you may know, universal health insurance is an issue which most Americans support. Yet, either out of fear of the health insurers (& Harry & Louise) or out of confusion, the many most progressive of elected representatives are not on board. It's not because they do not understand the issue, I don't think, but because of their assessment about what's possible. How can we change what feels to be a good idea to me (any you) into one we can win?
