Fine-tuning The Passover Seder
Passover, my favorite Jewish holiday begins on Monday Night, April 3, 2007. It celebrates the liberation of the children of Israel from slavery in Egypt. In homes of left-wingers (like mine) we retell the Passover story so as to integrate it with stories of freedom struggles of all people.
The custom of enlarging on the story first came to my attention almost forty years ago when Rabbi Art Waskow wrote a freedom seder . The traditional text of the Haggadah commands Jews to invite all people to the ceremony, especially strangers among us and the hungry.
This year many of us will add passages to our seders concerning immigration. You may know that, as the story goes, the children of Israel arrived in Egypt driven by famine. They were, that is, homeless, destitute immigrants. The Jewish Funds For Justice has a thoughtful Haggadah addition here or here. In my view, well worth a click and a read. Jewish Funds link
When I click on the Jewish Funds link I get a page can not be displayed message, which is not that unusual. However on the side of the page the phrase “EINGESCHRänkte sites†appears. I searched on the web and discovered EINGESCHRänkte is German for restricted. I don't know if this is related to the computer meltdown I'm experiencing (Perhaps a German Trojan Horse is infecting my computer). I don't speak German or visit any sites in that language.
