FDA Approves Morning After Pill
NARAL tells me that, an hour ago, the United States Food and Drug Administration approved the "morning-after" pill for over-the-counter sales (without a doctor's prescription). Congratulations to all who worked on this issue. It's safe, effective and now available. How often in the last Bush years has sound science, public policy and individual liberty triumphed over unreason and superstition? Not enough. We should enjoy the rare victory.

This isn't really much of a victory after all. Liz Krueger sent out a press release earlier today that talks about the problems it creates in terms of privacy for women.
Worth checking out, it's up on her site.
On this we disagree.
Even a partial victory, in this climate is a victory. We should savor it. Unless and until the political power of the know-nothing right is diminished, these wins will be few and far between.
Yes, the data support OTC EC for those under 18. Yes, that group is most at risk from the FDA's failure to act on the data, since those under 18 are less likely to have a doctor to go to.
It ain't what it could be and it ain't what it should be, but great God Almighty, it's better than what it was.

Science beats out politics for once!
The scientific advisors to the FDA recommended approval long ago. It was a surprise decision, based only on political ideology, not science, that led to the FDA refusing to approve it. As with so many issues, Bush let blind faith trump science.
It took time, but finally science has once again superceded blind faith at the FDA. If we could only get such victories with stem cell research and global warming. Instead we get vetoes and a rewriting of the NASA mission statement to exclude the "home planet."
