Why exactly is John McCain on our blog ads?

I'm not the only one who, when looking at this blog, is getting served McCain ads; people have been emailing about it.

I'm perplexed. I briefly (very briefly) considered voting for the man back in 2000, true enough, but there's no way Google AdSense can figure that out, unless their software is vastly more powerful than they admit to publicly.

So what gives? It's not as if this blog has content in line with the tightly-coiled candidate's views; we don't support anti-choice positions, we're not in favor of this escalation nonsense, and the McCain doctrine isn't finding much love hereabouts.

No, we're a leftwing blog in a City the Senator really has little hope of carrying, broadly adhering to ideas the gentleman from Arizona considers anathema.

Very mysterious, that.

Why not?

If the purveyors of this "movement" want to pay us to show it, why not take their money?

Back in 1996, I started receiving mail from both the Dole campaign and the RNC. Apparently, they thought I was a Republican. I didn't bother to disabuse them of their illusion; if they wanted to waste their money I was perfectly willng to let them.

My guess is that running ads for McCain on this website won't be very cost effective, and I'm fine with that.

Well

If I remember correctly, Bush started advertising on Air America Radio at the end of 2004. Probably doesn't cost that much and might even get some people. We know we have some conservatives reading us fairly regularly. They are potential advertising targets as well. As far as I am concerned, if they want to advertise here, let them!

McCain

The ads don't cost McCain a dime unless someone clicks on them if it was sold by Google. If the ad was sold by the ad rep firm in North Carolina that sells advertising on behalf of this site, it may depend on the specific deal.

There are 4 basic price models for online advertising.

1. Sponsorship (Flat fee regardless of audience)

2. CPM (Cost per thousand) Advertisers are charged a fee per thousand people reached, which may be defined as anything from page views to unique users.

3. CPC (Cost per click) Advertisers are charged each time an ad is clicked on. This is Google's ad model.

4. CPA (Cost Per Action) Advertisers are charged only when a certain action such as signing up for a credit card is taken.
