The Sun sets

The New York Sun, the City's rightwing rag for people who find the Post too crude, will cease publication today, per the newspaper's web site.

Ben Smith contributes a fond farewell here.

Naturally, one could draw the conclusion form this that newspapers in general are going the way of the dodo. There are many reasons to think this: the decline in print circulation occasioned by the internet, the loss of advertising revenue to cable and the web, and so on and so forth. The irony is that more people read newspapers today than probably at any point in history. The challenge for the industry isn't to attract more readers - they're doing that quite well - but to monetize the new distribution channels made possible by the online revolution.
