The ad campaign that shouldn't be run now

If you get the New York Times' carbon edition, flip over to page A7; it's a full-page ad in support of gay marriage, paid for by various LGBT groups and supported by various prominent individuals and organizations.

I'm not happy, and here's why: marriage equality is important to me. But it's neither the most important or for that matter the only thing on my priorities list. That list reads as follows:

  • Crush republicans in the Senate
  • Crush republicans in the House
  • Crush republicans in the states
  • Crush republicans any place they rear their pointy little heads
  • Everything else flows from that central goal of defeating the right - including further steps towards marriage equality.

One unforeseen advantage we have in the midterm elections is that the other party's base is just as disgusted with the current régime as the rest of us are. It's going to be difficult for the various hatemongers in high places to get these people whipped into the customary frenzy this year. Unless, of course, they get handed ammo from their favorite bogeymen - and that would be us, fellow brothers and sisters of the LGBT persuasion.

I'm firmly convinced that the gay marriage debate cost us 2004; it is simply the case that the country is moving in the direction of acceptance, but is not quite there - yet. It will be. But not yet.

And that's not going to change 106 days before the crucial election that will determine whether or not this odious régime continues on its present course without oversight.

Please, guys: run the ads in December. But don't give them a campaign issue they've used before, and to devastating effect. Don't help Rove get out the crazies this time.

    ...Which I am not.

Sorry, no cigar; I'm in a LTR, and would benefit from marriage equality.

That said, the timing on this is questionable, and distracts from the only way to actually achieve equality and large number of other goals, which is the defeat of the right at the polls.

As a registered republican, I somewhat agree with you - the republicans have abandoned their principles of small government and protection of individual liberty. The exception is 'the liberty committee' chaired by Ron Paul. He is the only congressman who bases his votes on whether or not the legislation is constitutional.
Unfortunately the democrats are worse and pander to ethnic blocks which will only polarize this country more.
And, btw have you heard you democrats lately? They are beating the war drums worse than the republicans.

    Completely disagree

I'm sorry Bouldin but I completely disagree with most of this post. Arguing against running an ad that supports what you believe is kind of like saying that you don't support it 100%. If you feel strongly enough about this issue, you should want these ads to run all the time. Let the people get convinced. How can you say the people are for this and than say don't run the ad because it will make you lose?

Also, this is not the reason Democrats lost 2004. John Kerry as an awful candidate is the reason. Get a presidential candidate that can connect to someone besides Northeastern elites and is able to articulate his positions effectively to the middle American voter (the way Clinton did) and you'd have yourself a victory, wedge issues be damned.

    uggh!

this sounds likes DLC politiking to me - soften the edges, throw our principles out the window, and then lose elections because we don't stand for anything

    completely bogus
