Markowitz leads mayoral race?

Oy vey.

In what is likely the first poll taken of New York City Democrats about the 2009 mayoral election - aside: this permanent campaign business really is tiring - results show an unlikely frontrunner: Brooklyn Borough President, Marty Markowitz.

No, seriously.

Markowitz was the top choice for mayor of 18% of Democratic voters, followed by 13% for Rep.Anthony Weiner (D-Brooklyn, Queens) and 11% for City Council Speaker Christine Quinn (D-Manhattan), a new Marist College/WNBC poll shows.

City Controller William Thompson and Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum each snagged 9% of the vote, and City Councilman Tony Avella (D-Queens) trailed at 4%.

Even Markowitz's wife was incredulous. "Is this serious?" asked Jamie Markowitz after The News informed her of the results. "This is all over New York City, right?"

2009 is going to be an absolutely glorious food fight, our own version of a thousand flowers blooming. The term limits on the City Council alone will see to that. With Marty being as well positioned as he seems to be, certainly, the sheer entertainment value of the whole exercise seems guaranteed.

Who cares?

Seriously, who gives a damn what a poll, taken more than a year and a half from the election, says? A year ago Hillary Clinton and Rudy Giuliani were huge favorites in presidential polls. Just a few months ago John McCain's numbers were practically negative.

But if you want to use a poll now, there are a few other things you should find out. Name recognition, favorable/unfavorable, depth of commitment -- these numbers, if they had been gathered, would have shown significantly different probabilities.

Whoever approved paying for this "poll" at the Daily News should be strung up for wasting their money.

Well, for one

it helps the clown raise money, and to get himself taken more seriously by the press and party folks

Hah!

Let him bloat his ego further. It will merely make its deflation that much more satisfying when far smarter and more capable candidates kick his ass. The Angry Clown is going down.

And be thankful. If his ego was only a bit smaller, he'd run for Public Advocate and win.

Marty Markowitz

Oh give me a break. Marty got more votes than Anthony Weiner, who did they ask his staff or Ratner's staff?

Gothanonymous Reader's picture

Before marty went into politics...

He was a used car salesman. That's what he's all about, he's very good at it. A better job for him after his run as Borough President, would be a Master of Ceremonies in the Borscht Belt. He has over 25 years experience at it.

Marty signed off...

Mr. Markowitz signed off on a multi-million dollar disaster, namely the lighting for the Parachute Jump in Coney Island. Now they want to spend another 1.5 million dollars to fix the problems. If he can't make the right judgement call as to a ligting project how can this buffoon take on the duties of the Mayor of New York City. It's a real joke.

Progressive Districts

Only in New York

You don't need a poll to know that the vast majority of Americans--Republican, Democrat, and Independent--are weary of the dead zone that politics has become, in which narrow interests vie for advantage and ideological minorities seek to impose their own versions of absolute truth...Perhaps more than any other time in our recent history, we need a new kind of politics, one that can excavate and build upon those shared understandings that pull us together as Americas.

— Senator Barack Obama
