Gays not welcome, firefighters, not really

(FDNY on 9/11/02)

Just stumbled across a completely infuriating blog post on Room Eight; it appears that the President of tomorrow's Saint Paddy's Day parade, John Dunleavy, has ordered that the FDNY contingent be moved further to the back of the parade, from the very front, for reasons of drunkenness. A sure sign that this is a bad move is that New York's stupidest blogger agrees with it.

Firehouse.com summarizes:

John Dunleavy, president of the parade's organizing committee, ignited this year's brouhaha by moving the FDNY from its traditional spot at the front of the parade to the middle of the pack.

Dunleavy then created a separate brew-haha by complaining that firefighters show up drunk for the parade - and continue drinking all day while in uniform.

Nice going there; first, Dunleavy indicates his gross stupidity by excluding gays and lesbians (because, I guess, no Irish fit that description) and then removes any lingering doubts about his stupidity by literally pushing the FDNY to the back of the bus. Because, and how unheard of that would be for Saint Patrick's Day, some members of the FDNY have a drink or two at the parade, unlike other New Yorkers who watch the events in cool sobriety.

Is there really anything more to add to this?

I highly doubt it has to do with the tip of the bottle

Could it be that political whore Dunleavy is mad at the brotherhood because they snubbed Giuliani? Remember, it was the little fascist who encouraged Dunleavy to keep the gays out.

Bouldin's picture

Probably.

It would be just like the Rs to do that, wouldn't it? Don't play ball, and face the consequences. Except in this case, methinks Dunleavy has miscalculated the power relationship; he's a little toad, and the firefighters are, well, the firefighters.

i am ferklempt he has had

i am ferklempt he has had the nerve to diss the firefighters that way. i mean, seriously!

He calls them drunkards and thinks he can get away with it?

Oh hell no.

Bouldin's picture

Yeah...

...because you know, it's not as if people like firefighters or appreciate them or anything like that. (/snark)

What a toad.

What I heard

Originally it was reported in the Irish Echo that the reason they were moved back was because last year some firefighters from New Orleans were marching with them, and they held up the parade a bit, and then partway through unfurled a sign that thanked the FDNY for their help with Katrina. That is against the rules I guess, because the only signs your allowed to carry are ones that announce who the group is, and ones that say "English out of Ireland." I thought that was pretty bogus, until I marched in the parade today and saw how crazy the marshals were about the rules. I had my cup of tea confiscated, and they told several people to put out their cigarettes.

It's pretty amazing to see how much the story has changed as more and more high level politicians have denounced the move. It probably is about Rudy, which makes it seem like it would have been a smart move for Rudy to denounce Dunleavy and try to kiss a little ass.

One other interesting thing to note, as I marched the parade, Rudy was the only one who's supporters in the crowd had a strong visible showing.

Also, my favorite part of the parade were the gay protesters along the route with signs that said "Keep the Gae in Gaelic"
