A serious challenger for King?
New York Newsday reports that Peter King seems to be getting a credible challenger; about effing time, I say.
Nassau Legis. David Denenberg (D-Merrick), who sees a different tide rising. With President Bush's plummeting popularity, exploding gas prices, and public anger over the war, Denenberg says King is beatable and will announce next Sunday at Tackapausha Park, in King's hometown, that he plans to take on the 14-year incumbent.
"He thanks God every night that Bush is our president," said Denenberg, referring to a recent King letter. "But the rest of us cry."
Denenberg's impending candidacy has surprised some because he is entering a race on which two other incumbent Democrats took a pass. And that was before King got national headlines, spearheading the fight against the Dubai port deal. It not only made King appear independent of Bush, but it allied the conservative GOP lawmaker with liberal New York Sen. Charles Schumer.
"It's surprising because it comes after King not only raised his profile nationally but in the New York market, which is always tough even for an incumbent," said Amy Walter, senior editor of the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, which handicaps Congressional contests.
Denenberg, however, said a poll taken after the publicity showed that King is just as vulnerable as he was in December - when Suffolk Legis. David Bishop (D-West Babylon) took a poll showing King in jeopardy if an opponent can tie him to Bush and his policies.
"Did it give me pause? Sure," said Denenberg, "But the poll shows that on the issues, people are just not with him." Backers also say Denenberg could benefit from a strong state ticket and from the possibility that many Republicans will stay home.
Every republican in this state is beatable; the only thing standing in the way of a complete sweep is the fecklessness of the Democrats.

Anybody but Denenenberg
David Denenberg? Not someone you'd want to send to Washington. I'm a lifelong Democrat, and if he ran for Congress, I'd give money to his Republican opponent just to keep him out of office. It's better to have a reactionary, backwards Republican in office than that arrogant putz! See below for some more about him. The more you know, the worse he seems.

Admits election violation

Nassau County legislator David Denenberg pleaded guilty yesterday to violating an election law by falsely claiming that he witnessed voters signing a petition.
Denenberg, 41, chairman of the Legislature's planning committee, faced up to a year in jail, but will serve no time as part of a plea deal. He was ordered to pay $160 in court fees.
"I was careless. I will not let this happen again," the Merrick Democrat told First District Court Judge Randy Sue Marber during his sentencing.
Outside the courtroom, Denenberg, a Manhattan lawyer, portrayed the misdemeanor crime as an oversight during a campaign year in which he and helpers collected thousands of signatures.
The petition that got the three-term legislator in hot water was for his post as a county Democratic Committee member. Dated June 19, 2003, it bore eight signatures that Denenberg said he witnessed being collected, though he did not.
"I am accepting responsibility with respect to that one petition amongst probably over 100 petitions that were filed in that year alone," he said.
His lawyers said that as part of the plea agreement, the judge granted Denenberg a "certificate of relief from civil disabilities" that should allow him to continue to hold office and practice law despite his conviction.
Chief Assistant Nassau District Attorney Patrick McCormick said Denenberg's testament that he witnessed the signatures, when he hadn't, broke the law.
"No matter who does it, the witnessing has to be accurate under the law, and failure to do it, or to falsely say that you witnessed it, is a crime," McCormick said.
McCormick denied charges that the case was politically driven by Nassau District Attorney Denis Dillon, a Republican.
"That's a ridiculous charge," he said.
But some Democrats don't see it that way.
David Stonehill, who serves on the Nassau Democratic County Committee, called Denenberg's case "selective prosecution" and said many Republicans have played "fast and loose" with petitions.

No Democrat can ever be as bad as a repug
King could be Mother Teresa for all I care. He's keeping us away from a majority and thereby enabling the radical-right agenda.
Is Denenberg going to be a tool for Tom DeLay, Denny Hastert, George Bush and Dick Cheney? No? Fine, good enough for me.
Most good liberals would agree.

King is in trouble
For the first time a well-funded and visible candidate will expose Kings record to the voters. King won't like that.
